09/23 - Lake Powell 2017

I haven't been boating in a while. Busy with other hobbies. Thought to check to see if you had a group this year. Now thinking about joining this time. I'll go wash off the boat and think about things a bit more. I'll try to decide in a few days or so and then sign up. Sounds like maybe a smaller group than back when I was around a few years ago.

Are all the facilities and ramps and stuff the same, or any noteworthy changes at the lake in the last few years? I'd likely head through Flagstaff to Page and Wahweap.

Unfortunately, Diane and I won't be able to make the gathering. Diane recently got out of the hospital. She is OK, but needs to recuperate. We might make it to Lake Powell this fall, but can't commit to a schedule.

Be careful out there! A microburst hit the lake around 9/14 and sank several boats and caused injuries. A houseboat overturned and a woman's arm had to be amputated.

We love Lake Powell, and would love to come this year, but the lake we will be on around the Powell dates is Kentucky Lake! Headed up the Cumberland River right now from Paducah to Green Turtle Bay on Lake Barkley! I am thinking you can count on us for the 2018 Lake Powell CBGT!

Heavy rains and strong winds are not uncommon at Powell--so are deaths (apparently 3 this year--not related to this storm)...I have never seen one of those house boats capsized--but I understand why! Always sad to hear of injuries. My feeling is that the C Dorys are more sea worthy than the 90 foot houseboats.

We always try and get weather reports and if heavy winds/rain is expected, get into as sheltered area as we can find--with good holding--extra anchors, and away from any cliffs where rocks might fall, or any canyon where there might be overfalls or flash flooding.

Wish we could be there--but those days are over for us.

Has this event taken place this year or is it still pending? Is a photo album needed?

Thanks!

Btw, I am out of excuses to not go anywhere since the trailer is rebuilt, the tow rig is new, and the boat is repowered, so maybe next fall we will finally get to go see this mystical lake on the Colorado River.

No way do you catch me out on that river this time of year!

Mike, As you know, I'm sure, and probably agree, there are times and places it could be great but I have to agree, it is chancy.

It looks as if you got all of the way up little Oak--one of our favorite places!

Thanks for the photos!
