10/16 - C-Dory Gelcoat Class

Dave et al, I really would like to go - even to get 1/2 pint or a pint of Tailgate Blue and join the fiberglass gathering but spousal unit will be in New Jersey across the middle of October and I'll be holding the fort here. :cry:

I will add some general knowledge to the fray. There is an old DVD still available on Amazon called Cosmetic Gelcoat volume 1, basic gelcoat damage repair & finishing. I just finished watching it and it's totally worth the money. Not only does it cover the usual gouge/hole repair, it has an excellent section on color matching. Yah, with the factory color numbers kindly provided by Scott, we should come very close without fooling with matching. but perfection could mean compensating for batch and supplier differences. (yuck)

Surprisingly (for me anyway) the DVD was produced in Mukilteo WA by Precision Fiberglass. Dunno if they're still in business, but the DVD is a great training aid and it takes a lot of the mystery out of simple repairs. It's certainly worthy of consideration even if you're going to Scott's seminar. Don't bother with Vol 2 or 3. All the goodies are in Vol 1.

I have a 1995 Angler that is green and ivory in color, can someone tell me the name and code of the "ivory" gel-coat on my boat. Also where in Canada can I source gel-coat repair material.

Wapiti I just received a quart of ivory gelcoat from Spectrum and it is a very close match to the ivory on my 1993 C-16. Close enough for me anyway.

The tag says "C-Dory ivory 98". Spectrum has color matches for all the C-Dorys from 2000-2009 but only one match in the '90's; 1998.

Currently it's $112/qt plus shipping. Sorry, I can't help you re: Canada.

I will add that the blue patch kit I received, which is the "Tailgate Blue" referred to by Scott, is a pretty good match to the blue on C-Brat as well. It appears C-Dory never ventured too far from tradition when it came to colors.

I would like to make the Oct.16 factory event but we are driving down to Wash. from Alaska and not leaving until Oct.16. It will be too late for me.
Have a salmon steak and some beer for me. I was going to bring some Alaska halibut along but?????
Do I understand that there will be smaller bottles of gel coat available at the meeting??? I could use some white and dark blue for my 2005 ProAngler for touch-up.
 
I haven't received it yet, but I ordered a quart of gel coat (in thickened form) using the factory matching color formula they had on file. It cost me $95 for the quart, $15 to have it thickened, and $5 for the tube of hardener, plus shipping. The business was very helpful and efficient. The representative's name is Melanie. This is the outfit http://www.gelcoatproducts.com/about_us.html. It would be nice if they sold smaller quantities as I really only need a tablespoon or less, but I haven't seen that for a long time. A pro quoted me a price of over $800 to come out and match the gel coat (guaranteed of course), or over $400 if I brought the boat to him. I patched the boat before using a color matched gel coat and it was invisible. I have also used the old Match N Patch kit on another boat and I must have tried 20 times and only got an OK match. So I am not saying the pro isn't worth it if you must have a perfect match, but $800, geez. TWO-DAWGS.
 
Just a quick update to my earlier post. The thickened "paste" gel coat from www.gelcoatproducts.com matched my buff white C-dory color perfect. I was shocked there wasn't a color change due to fading. I fixed two scratches to where they are invisible. But then I hit a snag. In a spot near my third repair I hit a small patch of paper thin original gel coat and just the lightest of sanding left a dark area where you can see the underlying fiberglass through the gel coat. Has anyone dealt this this before? My plan, unless I hear a better idea, is to (1) de-wax the area, (2) tape around the location, and (30 then apply a tiny smear of gel coat using a plastic putty knife with tape on the ends to give me about 1 mil of coating over the darkened area and about 3/4 inch around it to give an area to feather sand the edges. Anyone see a flaw in that plan, other than operator error? TWO-DAWGS
 
I ran into those thin areas on both the Jenny B and the C-Brat. I didn't get specially thickened gelcoat - when I needed it I added a thickening agent. The only difference between your procedure and mine is that I used an artist brush NATURAL BRISTLE ONLY and "painted" then tipped the area. The thinner gelcoat was far easier to play with than the thick stuff and it flowed on fairly smooth.

Thanks, Don. I know it shouldn't, but I am a little comforted that someone else has had this problem. I am going to use your technique as plan B if my efforts don't pan out. Al at gelcoatproducts.com told me I can thin out my paste gel coat with a little acetone. In my other repairs I was careful not to sand down the existing gel coat, but there was no sign of it being thin and I wasn't too worried about it. I am going to be much more careful from now on. Great timing on this class. I need to fix a few nicks and bumps on C-Change and would love to attend if there is still room. If so, what is a good time to show up.

At the request of a few I added this to the Calendar and created a signup list. Scott has asked only that the size of the group be limited to less than 20 people. I also renamed the thread and moved it to this forum so it would show up on the front page event list. I left a shadow topic in the General forum when I moved it, but hadn't changed the name yet. Now it's all screwed up. When you click the original thread title in the front page recent topic list it says it doesn't exist. If you click through it from the General forum index, it does work. I don't want to delete the the shadow topic for fear that it will wipe out this new real one. Good luck figuring out all of this stuff.
 
Well I sure as heck hope someone who attends will videotape Scott's seminar and make it available to those of us who can't go! Some people are adept at picking up techniques and procedures by reading and studying. I'm not one of those! If a picture is worth 1000 words, a videotape would be darn near priceless.

Another idea is to take pictures (use a flash and take many) and make a Power Point presentation. After the ppt file is final, someone can record narration as a mp3 file then both files are posted online.

If there is enough interest I make a movie at no cost with slides in sync with the audio, with full player controls and burn to CD or post online ex

I made a demo to highlight the CDs but the movies can be streamed but most of our presentations have several high quality images and streaming requiring a fast internet connections to load the images. One talk the ppt file size was 320Mb! Yikes

Movie requires Internet Explorer and Windows XP or higher .
It should run on a MAC but need IE for MAC to view it and the last time it ran fine on 10.3

Well, I hope you are adept with the fibergalass thing. I usually take my boat to the repair shop for this type of work. They seam to match the gel coat and do a great fiberglass job on the dock rubs and fuel dock gouges. As a matter of fact, its in there now after a fun filled summer in PWS Alaska. By the way, its worth the price for the head aches you will have doing it your self!
 
There are now 11 Brats signed up, wish we were close enough, nothing takes the place of a hands on, in person sort of class. I commend Scott and the Factory in offering it!

Not to take anything away from him and what he is doing (and for those of us who live on the Right Coast), West System offers a lot of on line info, including .pdf files and how-to videos on their USER GUIDE WEBSITE. Of course it's all about using their products but the techniques will work with anyone's material, no mater who makes it. They also have a free magazine which is mailed 4X a year to anyone who asks for it, available also on line with all the back issues.
