16' Angler Owners Questions

A few questions for the group as I am researching what model to purchase. With all due respect for the other owners I really need just answers from experianced current and former 16 owners on the following questions. I do understand boats in general very well, just not up to speed with all the nuances C Dory line up.

How is boat balance with a kicker?
Bracket or straight off the transom?
What size do you run?
Anyone troll the main motor for extended periods?
Anyone run auto pilot and what make?
Thanks in advance!

On mine I mount the kicker directly to the transom. Works fine with both my short shaft Suzuki 6 hp and long shaft Tohatsu 6 Sail Pro. Got the sail pro because of the charging and high thrust prop, and it is only available as 20 or 25" shaft. When going solo I usually mount the kicker on the port side, when I have a passenger or enough camping gear for counter balance I prefer to mount it on starboard side. Starboard side is preferred as my transducer is on the Port side and can interfere with placement. Also starboard is normal captains side, so if you have a guest you can still sit on your respective sides when piloting the kicker. I don't fish so can't answer about trolling for extended periods but many here have 22s with twin 40s or 50s that they would presumably run one as the kicker for trolling extended periods.

In my experience (kicker on Port) the balance is good, no problems, even with a 9.9 4-stroke (relatively heavy). I think it's because of the aft flat hull shape. I think on a v bottom you might notice the kicker weight more?

We have 16 cruiser and troll for kokanee (lake fishing) without a trolling motor, instead using a Cabalas drift sock and easily achieve our goal of 1.5 mph. We attach a tube towing harness with a float on it (keeps everything out of the prop) to the boat, and then about 15 ft of line to the sock. I also attached a trip line to the other end of the sock to easily and quickly dump the sock if a cross wind starts to take us off course. When the trip line is released, the sock will quickly refill and slow the boat again.
We use this setup for several reasons; less weight astern, both trolling motor and operator, with Ellen steering from the helm she has a comfortable seat, and good view of the fish finder, and I can watch both poles and the sock from the 2nd seat, and quickly make any necessary adjustments. Since both of us are seated most of the time, weight is forward, and stability is better, at least until we have to land a fish.
We have had this setup for several years and it works well enough that I have no intention of changing it.

My 16' Angler has a 6hp Evinrude mounted on the starboard side of the transom which unbalances the boat with one person on board. I think I'll
move it to the port side this winter.

Also, the boat originally had the manual wipers mounted off to the side of the windshield where they only wiped the corners. I drilled new holes and center mounted them....Now I can see ....

My 16 has a Yamaha 4 hp kicker mounted directly on transom port side. With 12 gallons of gas on port side and battery on starboard it is a good balance. No problem getting on plane with yamaha F50.
