16 ft angler for the Monterey Bay?

Hi folks,

I'm new to the site, and quite possibly a new (used) C-Dory owner. Currently I co-own a 20ft proline walk around with my brother that sits in a slip in the Santa Cruz harbor. The boat was perfect for my needs when I was living in Santa Cruz and had the it on a trailer in front of my house. However, now that its in a slip and 45 miles away, it spends more time sitting and rotting than fishing. I'm spending way too much on slip rentals and maintenance to justify the amount of time I spend fishing.

That brings me to the 16ft angler. It seems to be the most seaworthy boat that will fit in front of my house in Monterey. The space I have is about 23ft, and if I put a boat anywhere else I will be reminded of it daily by my wife .

So...can anyone offer some advice? I usually fish solo or plus 1, so deck space isn't too much of a problem. I don't see my self running out of the bay for Albacore, but weather permitting...maybe? I do want to be able to get to wherever the salmon are. I also do a lot of live bait fishing so I would be curious about where people have put live wells. Does she troll well? Would I have to high tail it at the first sign of a little wind?

Any advice or is greatly appreciated. Especially if you have experience with the Monterey Bay!

Hi Joe,
Welcome to the C-Brats website! The question of the C-Dory 16's seaworthiness comes up often - just within the last month there has been some discussion about that subject. A quick forum search will turn up lots of info. I'm sure some one will chime in with some of the threads.
Your basic question about the boat specifically in Monterey Bay I can answer straight out. It would be fine - no problem. I've lived on Monterey Peninsula all of my life and played around in the bay since the 1950's some of the time in boats less capable than the 16! Of course this goes with the caviot that you have to use good judgement! There a days when you have no business out there in any boat and days when you could sail to Santa Cruz in a dingy and days (lots of them) in between. I spent lots of my summers in PG as a boy fishing and goofing around in a 14' open boat. I had rules and boundaries (which of course I pushed) and never got into any serious difficulty. A boat like a C-Dory 16 would have been heaven!
I'm on my way out now. When I get back I'll find some of the discussions about the 16 and post the links. If you want to you can pm me with a phone number and I'd be glad to answer any specific questions you have.

Sorry got back late last night.
Entering "C-Dory 16" in the search function (upper left this page) brings up lots of threads for 16's. Lots of info in those--I don't have time to to look through right now but I'm sure there is a lot there about their capabilities. I think it would be a great small fishing boat for a lone fisherman or with maybe one buddy. The cabin is really nice on one of our cool foggy afternoons!!
