1987 and above have a modified v, and fiberglass hull?

Is it true that the years 1987 and above have the modified v instead of all flat bottom? and fiberglass instead of wood?

Yes, the 1987's and thereafter have a shallow modified v-hull, and have a balsa core sandwich bottom made up of lots of little blocks of balsa with glass fiber cloth and roving on both sides. I believe the back of the hull near the transom has only 2 degrees of "V", with more forward.

The older ("Classic") pre- 1987 C-Dorys had a flat bottom with a plywood sandwich construction with glass fiber cloth and roving on both sides of the plywood. The bottom of those hulls looks like the business side of a clothes iron, with the sides curving outward instead of inward like the clothes iron!

The transoms were originally plywood cored, and the early models of the 1987's and onward for a few years had plywood cores. At some later date, the plywood was replaced with balsa. A synthetic core that cannot rot would be better choice, and may be in some later models. Someone with knowledge of this part of the history may well be able to correct me on this part of the history.

So, is it a better to have a c dory which is 1987 or later? Are there advantages or disadvantages of older or newer boats other than the price?
Reason I ask is that im trying to decide which year to buy. Cost is an issue for me however I do not want to regret or wish I would have waited to purchase a newer model.

Jim,

The 90s boats were among the best built C-Dory 22s there are. While they make tweeks every so often to improve the boat, they really have not changed terribly much over the years. If you have your heart set on a pre 87 boat they are fine too as they were good boats; I just would rather have one made after that as they have a better design for what I do. I hope this helps.

What About the Difference in Handling and Steering between the pre-1987 and post 1987???

Any Difference in slow speed , idle Steering during docking ???

Methinks it is five degrees. Either way it's not much. I dunno if the pre V hulls have the small reverse chines the V's do.

I doubt if you would see any difference in slow speed handling or docking in the earlier flat bottom boats. The minor keelson that the newer boats is minimal.

In rough water, the newer boats may handle slightly better, but in either boat you have to put the bow down, going into chop, and bring it up going down wind/waves.
