2008 C-Dory Venture 23

It seems to me that from the get-go, the 23 and 26 were designed to be the "next generation" of the 22 and 25... they share so many traits. However, much like BMW came out with the K series motor, thinking it would supercede the R, the "loyalists" insured that both series continued. My take is that it will be the same with C-Dory.

I see C-Dory producing all 4 boats as a win/win for them and consumers... with the two different molds, they can be producing both boats simultaneously, and the customer can vote with their wallet. It would seem that these boats would take sales away from each other - a problem with 2 companies, but not so with C-Dory producing both.

Some of it will be a matter of taste (I still think the "classic" styles of the 22 and 25 are better looking), but it's good business to offer the customer a "step-up" and "new and improved."

Oh, yeah, I've owned R and K series bikes, too. (Joel and Casey will understand)

Best wishes,
Jim B.

It is interesting to note that the 23 does not appear to have the "blow and go" interior found on the newer CD's, which I feel is substandard compared to Valkyrie's cabin. I'll be curious to see how accessible the storage areas are on the new 23, also.

I also wonder about the accessibility of the wiring if the headliner covers this feature.

I can't wait to see the Venuture 23 up close and personal at the SBS in a couple of weeks. Last year, Caryn and I were impressed with the fit and finish of the Skagit Orcas but obviously not impressed with the price tag and fuel consumption.

Maybe the Venture series will address those fit and finish needs for us while maintaining the fuel economy we're used to with the CD22? Does anyone one know when the Venture 26 will be done?

Forrest, good points about its advantages as a fishing platform.

One of the features of the early C Dories is that you can hose out the interior after removing the upholustry. Not sure if this feature applies to the newer boats or the Venture series.

James I think time will tell but if sells are good enough for the newer models I think in a year or two you could see the retirement of the c-dory "origianl" line.

What I would really love to see is the reinterduction of the 27 pilot house. Now several of you are saying " there he goes again" but Iam just hoping some one from c-dory is reading and takes note of my needs and desires.

It took quite a while for me to decide that I wanted a 22 Cruiser and then some had to post a Comparison of the cc 23 and the 22 cruiser. Now I am back to making up my mind again. I guess I can't go wrong with either boat. It is like when I learned to swim and my Dad took me out in the middle of the lake and just threw me in? The swimming isn't that hard. but getting out of the burlap bag was a challenge.

A few of you have mentioned wanting to look over the new 26' Venture. This is a currently available CC26 and I would guess (again that's mine and just an opinion) that the new C-Dory 26' Venture is going to be very very close. Keeping in mind that C-Dory got the molds from the Tolands. This is a good price if you want a great cabin cruiser and can have someone rig it with a motor. I was considering it myself prior to purchase, but dealer support won me over. Specially since I barely have time to use the boat, let alone fix something if it needs.

For folks considering a Venture 23 or 26,

In case you haven't seen these photos, here is a link to comparison photos of the CD 22 and Venture(was CC)23.

In addition there is a comparison of the CD 25 and the Venture(was CC)26. (Click on the left menu--side by side 2.)

The pictures section of that same site has photos of owner's CC 23's and CC 26's

Couple of observations on the CC26.

1. The sharper bow entry might be better INTO chop, but I'd estimate the handling to suffer in a quartering or following sea, even to the point of dangerous. I like my bow entry just fine.

2. Appears it has smaller passenger seats, somewhere between a CD22 and CD25. I see it as able to only carry 3 people, 2 at the dinnette and 1 at the helm. Might be OK for some, but not for many of my trips.

3. I didn't see any storage under the cockpit floor? I use mine a lot: Stern anchor, chain and rode; sea anchor; dingy motor gas can, hose, spare prop, etc.

Fit and finish look good, but all and all, I'll keep mine thank you very much.

Steve,

I too think the CC version of the 26 did not have proper storage.

The C-Dory version may have a better interior. We will have to wait for one to be built to see.

My opinion after a test drive in a CC23 was that it was all around a better handling boat than a CD 22(I owned one for 15 years).

I just got back from Mount Vernon, and saw the Venture 23 that they got in this morning. I did not notice the storage, but I did notice that this boat has plenty of cabin space, AND plenty of fishing room.

One of this sites moderators was kind enough to invite me over for a viewing of his 22 Angler last week. I even cost him much of the 3rd quarter of the Seahawk game! My impression was that the 22 footer has either enough cabin room or enough fishing room (cruiser vs angler). The Venture has a nice mix of both, (for what I am looking for).

Now I will have to compare storage, but this may be more importat to the cruising set, and i am not there yet.

We loved this boat. Too bad I won't be able to find a used one for a while.

Dee and I went to the Portland Boat Show last weekend and got to compare the CD22 and Venture 23 and all the other boats at the Sportcraft display. First off the Sportcraft staff are a very friendly and helpful group and we spent some time providing feedback for them.

Impressions I got when comparing the two were the 23 would allow either Dee or I to stand up and not have to stoop to see out the windows (I’m 6 foot and Dee is 5ft 8in). The bow entry is sharper and bottom is a little less flat. The transom is enclosed and there are more “lapstrakes” and the sides have more angle likely making it a dryer running hull. The overall impression the 23 Venture is the next generation, less spartan boat that has a full headliner, lined cabin, v-berth and built-in side draperies. The CD 22 is a good value; the Venture 23 is the next step up. Both have the molded fiberglass cabinets and the 22 cockpit floor was a single molded flat panel (nice improvement). If we were buying a smaller boat we would want the Venture 23 because of the visibility and new hull design. I don’t have a problem with the more Spartan feel of any of the C Dorys, I just like the improvements in the hull and cabin design. That said I don’t think we will be going from our CD 25 to a smaller boat unless we buy a second boat like the CD 16 Cruiser or Angler or the Ranger 21. :wink

The 22 Angler still has the cockpit floor that is the bottom of the hull and has the decragard plywood/laminate cabinets that were of a good fit and finish. :thup

The 22 center console was a cool boat for warmer climates (I’ll stick with our CD25 warm, enclosed cabin) but the walk around capability would make this a cool fishing boat that could accommodate 6 people easy.

Of course the Ranger tugs are way cool (I love the 21!).

The 16 cruiser has a bunch of room under the v-berth for storage!

We can’t wait for the SBS! :D :D

Here's some interior shots for those interested. I do like this version but the cost is just getting out of my comfort zone. Anyway, here ya go.
