2012 Delta/Bay Extravaganza and Catalina Offshore Adventure

Dear All:

The Delta and Bay Extravaganza is entirely filled up for 2012. We are in the process of confirming all the marina reservations and we will get back to everyone with the details.

Below is the current list of confirmed attendees:

1. Jim and Kath on Pounder
2. John and Robbin on Dinner Belle II
3. Eric and Heather on Chack Chack
4. Steve and Compay on Dora Jean
5. Dr. Bob and Marie on Thisaway
6. Jon on Gypsy River
7. Kent and Marcia on Marcia Jane
8. David and Donald on Blue Eagle
9. John and Laurie on TBD
10. Joel and Susan on SEA3PO
11. Roger and PJ on C-Hawk.

We were able to add an 11th C-Dory to the Extravaganza this year because John and Robbin on Dinner Belle II were not able to go to San Francsco on the last day Sunday, and therefore we were able to squeeze in the 11th vessel.

We are looking forward to this event in May.

Sincerely,

Jim

Looks like a great crew. I just got the G2 charts for my plotters and we are almost ready to go.

Send us a PM with the costs and itiniary. Looking forward to a great time!

Share with all of us. Where are we launching from? I need to find a place to board my cat-most likely Sacramento. Looking forward to the cruise.

Board the cat? The year we did this cruise, our Molly enjoyed it as much as we did...

SausCatWalkE.jpg

She even rode on the 4 wheeler with us at the Duck Club.

We will have Angel with us--and she gets along with cats fine. The cruise seems to be pet friendly from the last time Miss Priss and I did it....

Thanks Jim- It was nice talking with you again.

Jon- Riversun45, We launch out of the Delta Marina at Rio Vista. Jim will be posting more on the schedule in the next few days.

Roger

hi Roger....Would you mind bringing Susan along with you when you head north...... I am heading north next week...got lots of work to get done before she gets to the cabin.... I will have the boat with me this year...I need to use it as a camper for the next couple of weeks....we will meet up in Rio Vista.

Thanks

Joel

Thursday, May 10th leave Wheeler Island (private Duck Club) no later than 9:30 AM (on an early incoming tide if possible), and arrive at the City of Petaluma (Petaluma Turning Basin). On Thursday, we will try to leave the Duck Club in the morning after breakfast, in time to safely cross San Pablo Bay, and to make a 2:00 PM scheduled bridge opening at Petaluma. On Thursday night we might go down to Volpi’s Italian Bar (been there since 1918), in the City of Petaluma, on Washington Street, for dinner.

4. Friday, May 11th, Sausalito Schoonmaker Point Marina
Harbor Master Mike (415) 331-5550

• Cost of $1.00 per foot, either $22, $25, or $26 per night, depending on vessel size
• Cash only, paid individually, at check-in
• Key deposit at check-in, on credit card
• Rest rooms and showers

• Everyone together, lined up on “F” dock.

Friday, May 11th, leave Petaluma at 9:00 AM to transverse San Pablo Bay safely, and arrive at the City of Sausalito (Schoonmaker Point Marina). We need to clear the Petaluma “D” Street Bridge by 9:00 AM, Friday morning. Channel 9 is used by the Commodore to communicate with this bridge. (The C-Dory Group will communicate on Channel 69, but also monitor Channel 16.)

At Schoonmaker Point Marina in Sausalito, we will be staying on “F” dock. Remember to line up on Day Marker #6, on the way into, and out of, the Sausalito channel. Sausalito is a good place to refill, or top-off, your fuel tanks for the rest of the trip. On Friday night we might go down to the Sausalito Cruising Club for dinner, or we may try to sneak into the Sausalito Yacht Club for dinner.

5. Saturday, May 12th, San Francisco South Beach Harbor

• Credit card deposit for electronic key to restrooms and showers
• Rest rooms and showers
• Shore power and water hookups
• Everyone together on “A” dock with assigned slip numbers to be given later on trip.

Saturday, May 12th, leave Sausalito in morning and tour Bay and/or Angel Island, and arrive at the City of San Francisco (South Beach Harbor). On Saturday morning some will go over to Angel Island for a hike and picnic, before we cross the Bay to San Francisco. On Saturday night we usually have dinner at one of the local casual San Francisco neighborhood restaurants.

6. Sunday, May 13th

Leave San Francisco at dawn’s first early light, and return to Rio Vista so as to arrive before Noon. On Sunday, we will leave at Sunrise (sharp), and head non-stop back to Rio Vista. We should pull into the docks at Rio Vista, approximately 11:00 AM, Sunday morning.

The above itinerary seems like a very rigid schedule. In actual fact, anything can happen along the way to throw it off. Sometimes we are not able to meet our plan as scheduled, due to weather conditions.

In the Central/West Delta main channels one wants to avoid the incoming wind, and the outgoing tides, as they can be nasty enough, in combination, to even put a mighty C-Dory out-of- commission. Once you are West of Pittsburgh, the water channels become wider and bigger, and the wind is usually going to be coming at you from the West, and if the tide is going out, hang on for a rough passage! On a few trips we have had blue water going over the tops of our C-Dory’s crossing San Pablo Bay.

Amazingly, for the last few years, we have lucked out with the weather, and we have been able to finish off the entire trip itinerary, as we originally planned it. However, in some past years we have had to modify our schedule substantially, and stop at interim locations, or stay over at a given location an extra day or so, to “ride out” the passing weather.

For full disclosure, for the new attendees, this Extravaganza covers approximately 200 NM in five (5) days, and there is always unpredictability in weather and water conditions. The more experienced, competent, and generally relaxed Skippers have generally enjoyed this trip the most.

As always, each boat Captain is solely responsible for his/her own boat’s, and passenger’s, ultimate safety and well-being. Each Skipper is not to rely on the judgment (or lack thereof) of the Pack Commodore. It helps the Group to show up with your vessel in good operating condition and with full tanks of fuel when you leave Rio Vista.

There is no need for anyone to bring food for either Wednesday night, or Thursday morning. Please feel free though to host your own dock happy hour at any of our destinations. Everyone is on their own for breakfasts and lunches throughout the trip. Some folks bring their own food with them, and others just go out to eat, as there are plenty of good restaurants to eat breakfast and lunch nearby. Usually, most of us go out for a group dinner every night.

This is our 10th time for this C-Dory cruise, and we have always enjoyed ourselves, and the other attendees, or we would not keep doing it. We enthusiastically again look forward to the trip this year.

This year, like last year, we need to collect some marina reservation fees in advance. The advance marina reservation fees, per vessel, this year are $45.00 for San Francisco ($35 + $10), and $23 for Petaluma, for a total of $68.00 ($45 + $23).

You will pay your own launch fees and parking costs at Rio Vista when you check-in there; and you will pay your own marina fees at Sausalito when we arrive there. The San Francisco marina has to be paid in advance, and for convenience, we decided this year, to also prepay the Petaluma fees. There are no fees for our stay at Wheeler Island!

Please send a check for $68.00 to confirm your reservation. This fee will be non-refundable, even if you do not show up, for whatever reason, as San Francisco and Petaluma will not refund it. Along with your check, please provide (1) the full first and last names for yourself and crew; (2) your vessel name; and (3) your vessel CF number. This information is used for marina reservations.

Please send your check, payable to Jim Gibson, along with the above requested information, to Jim Gibson, at 15 Noah Court, Sacramento, California, 95831. Please send your check by April 15th (a date that is easy to remember).Thank you for your interest in this event. Nine (9) of the eleven (11) attendees signed up for this event are repeats from prior years, and we believe that this is some testimonial to the overall trip experience.

As always, we look forward to seeing everyone in May. If there are any questions, please call. Kath and I are looking forward to another fun C-Dory gathering.

Sincerely

Jim

The check is in the mail, we have printed up two copies of the instructions and itinerary, As per the Admiral there is a copy on the boat and in the truck.

We will probably launch on the 8th at Delta Marine, as we did last time. (We will be driving over from spending about 10 days at Lake Powell, and rather than take a chance on the drive; arrive a day early.)

We will be heading toward Sequim directly on the 13th after hauling out. We need to spend as much time with our friends there as possible before the Friday Harbor gathering.

Thanks for all of the work you do in making this one of the best C Brat cruises!

Laurie and I are really looking forward to meeting some new friends and seeing other C-Dorys in action! I will be putting a check, CF# and boat name in the mail Monday.

We have put quite a few hours trying to come up with a great boat name for our little 22 CD and after going around in circles we've decided to leave the name as it came to us, Sea Queen... at least for now. We just couldn't have you guys calling our boat "TBD" for the duration of the cruise .

I thought some of our fellow cruisers might want to know that I just finished brewing up a new batch of my version of an American Ale. It should be ready to fully enjoy just about the time of the Delta Extravaganza... gosh what should I do with all that beer ? hmmm.

Dear All

We have now received checks for marina deposits from nine (9) of our eleven (11) indicated attendees. Thank you all for your participation and prompt responses.

However, we still have not received marina deposits from David and Donald on Blue Eagle, and Eric and Heather on Chack Chack. You both still have until this weekend to reply. If any of these two boats decide to dropout we may reopen up our reservation list at that point.

We have had one small change in our marina reservations in that at Schoonmaker Point Marina, in Sausalito, we will now be staying on "D" dock instead of "F" dock because F dock got prebooked by a big yacht club. It should still work out well for us and our small virtual yacht club as "D" dock is even more protected in front of the calm breakwatered beach, and we will still all be together in a scenic slip location. This will be the first time we have stayed on "D" Dock

More later,

Jim

That's great, an "inside" dock, I consider that an upgrade from coach to business class! Way to go Jim...with your excellent timing and guidance of coarse.

Dear All.

The Extravaganza is now just two weeks away. We are getting excited about the upcoming event. Ten of the eleven vessels have sent in their checks, and the last remaining vessel has said he is going and his check is in the mail. Thank you all for your participation.

This year as a bonus, we are adding a serious salmon outing to the Extravaganza. The samon have been running heavily offshore the past two weeks out of Monterey, probably the best king salmon fishing in the past ten years. Many beautiful 15 and 20 pounders have been caught. These salmon are now heading North to the Golden Gate!

Some of us are planning on going offshore salmon fishing on the morning of Saturday, May 12th, assuming the fish have arrived and the weather is permitting. We will be leaving Sausalito very early in that morning and heading out the Golden Gate, maybe up to 12 miles offshore.

We are having an expert local salmon fishing guide join us to help lead us to the fish (hopefully). Anyone interested in going are welcome to follow us in their own boats offshore. Please bring your salmon fishing rods, reels, and tackle if you want to go. Downriggers are very helpful, and if not available, bring some sacrificial lead balls. We would recommend the bigger C-Dorys with offshore experience for this outing, and it is best to be equipped with radar.

More later on other trip updates.

Sincerely,

Jim

O Boy, are you in trouble with the Admiral! We left all of our heavier tackle in FL, and brought only light spinning gear for the Powell leg of the trip! (down rigger also left in P cola!)

On the other hand, we have been offshore in this area in some larger boats (38, 62 and 46 footers all motor sailors)--and it can get really nasty!

Thisaway is at Powell, and after 10 days there will be heading for the Delta!

Hey Jim, do you happen to know if I need a special stamp for salmon fishing up there outside the gate? In SoCal, the normal ocean stamp covers salmon fishing, limit 2.

Hi Steve.

I talked to my salmon guide some more. One does not need a special stamp for these offshore king salmon.

Regarding salmon fishing on Saturday, it will be very dependent on whether the salmon actually make it this far North by then. The guide says it is possible, but not for sure, that they will be here in two weeks.

It is possible, the guide says, that the salmon may only make it from Monterey, to say Half Moon Bay, in the next two weeks. That would then require a three hour trip from the Golden Gate, south to find them.

Bring your stuff, and we will play it by ear, real time based on the fishing and weather reports at the time. It would be great if the salmon actually got to SF by then, and we just had to tuck ourselves outside the Gate.

We have to be very mindful of the weather. Two weeks ago an experienced sail boat race crew lost their boat at the Farallon Islands, and five persons parished out of an eight person crew. Bottom line we will have to use good judgement concerning our being able to actually reach the salmon, both time and economic wise, and ultimately safety wise.

I know Kath will be alot happier with me not going salmon fishing and risking my neck as she would rather have me hiking around Angel Island with her! We will just have to see what the conditions are and how we feel at the time. I am bringing all my stuff in case the stars align, and the guide will come if the conditions are right.

Sincerely,

Jim
