2016 Cruising Plans

Harvey, Thank you for connecting the threads. I'm sure many of the brats will want to be aware of this.

You are Welcome. I thought it was worth taking it off so as not to hyjack this one on travel plans, (and it was a good exercise for me :oops:

Just a bump, and a thought.

I know there were other C-Dorys out cruising in the areas. I know I tried to make a "ANY CBRAT" call on the VHF, but I'm not sure that is a "kosher" call on 16. I think 9 is a bit less strictly "enforced" but I tried that one a couple of times too, with no results.

I'm wondering if there is a good time and channel that could be used, like a ham net type function, to call on and maybe make contact with another Brat that is with in reach that you were unaware of.

I know that often times VHF 68 is thought of as the CBRAT channel, but I have tried 68 quite often, even when I could see a boat, and didn't get any response back on the radio.

Any thoughts?

Harvey;

We always scan 16, 22 & 68 in SE Ak & BC. I don't think there is a problem hailing on 16 as long as you go to a different channel once contact is made.

If anyone knows anything different, please chime in.

I'd like to see an easily accessible list with our MMSI numbers. We can program these in our radios (those with DSC), and then making a group call out would be quite easy. One can query positions, etc. Colby

Fast forward...Reefmadness has made it to Elfin Cove AK. We're are currently staying at a friends home in the cove. This has allowed us to regroup after a month on the boat. We left Blaine WA May 15th with 2 other boats in our flotilla. Our friends followed us as far as Ketchikan and Petersburg before time constraints forced them to turn South leaving us to continue solo. In an effort to share our journey with friends and family, we have created a blog. Please follow us at http://www.undocked.org

Glad you made it to Elfin Cove. I'll bet lots of great adventures so far! Hopefully most weren't like the run along Lynn Canal as far as Hoonah! It sounds as if you may have missed Jay and Jolee by only a day or two!--or perhaps you were both in Auke bay at the some time.

Keep us up to date on the travels. We always caught Halibut on the North side of Pybus cove--using Herring we jigged in Petersburg. There is a ledge there which has been consistent with 40 to 50 lb fish for us. But the locals along the way will always know the best! Plus they are such great people.

Calm Seas--no more "River Horse" antics!

Sounds like there will be several C-BRATS in the area between Port Harvey and and Echo Bay around the July 1 to 4 times. In case you missed it, and want to give it a try, since the Friday Harbor CBGT we have been using a Group Call MMSI number:

036697831 = C-BRATS Group MMSI # on DSC

If you want more info on the number or the process check this thread.
http://www.c-brats.com/viewtopic.php?t=24235&highlight=

If you have your MMSI number input to your VHF, add this one in the Group Call List on your radio and you can call for other C-BRATS in your area.

I hope to see some of you around, watching the whales, fishing or hanging out in a quiet cove, enjoying.

Dr Bob, Thanks for the secret fishing hole info. We may check it out on our return trip. We were at Harris Harbor in Juneau and missed Jay & Jolee. We have crossed paths with Sam Landsman (Wagoneer Cruising Guide) a couple times in BC at Hartley Bay and again in Ketchikan. He had taken a flotilla from WA to Alaska. We will be in the Elfin Cove, Glacier Bay area through July. Heading south the 1st part of August. From here we will go to Prince of Wales Island for a week. Hope to try a little river fishing. I will continue to try my hand a blogging. It is not easy with the lack of connectivity in these parts. http://www.undocked.org

Gene, Enjoyed the blog, first time on it, and the video. Sounds like teh TomCat runs pretty quiet. Nice.

Stay safe.

Will be watching and listening for you on your way south.

I copied Larry's post about the Marina's VHF call to this thread from the Port Harvey because I thought it it might get better exposure here.

That's good news about Port Harvey Marina.

Minor correction...The VHF channel is 66a, or 66 Alpha, as in the USA mode.

All Canadian marinas use 66a, they are not allowed to answer on VHF 16.

IO had a discussion about VHF channels with a Canadian Coast Guard official just yesterday, Using 83A, for thier non-emergency or working traffic. He had me chasing all through my VHF manuals for a way to turn on the "A" after I chose the channel. :roll:

Leave the radio in US mode and it is already an "A" channel.

The difference is that if one radio in the conversation is not in the same "mode" as the other, only half of the conversation gets heard. At least that is the way I understood it.
