23 Venture performance numbers.

Just for fun- we have a 23 Venture we have rigged with a 115 E-Tec. These perfromance numbers are with 500 pounds of gear and people and 10 gallons of fuel. Engine is turning an aluminum 15" three blade prop, and the boat will stay on plane down to 2500 rpm.

3.45 MPG at 38 MPH is impressive, but 500lbs gear and people is light; 10 gal of gas is cutting it short must have been a short cruise.

Would like to see your numbers when fully laden with gear/gas/ and water.
 
Just a quick sea trial prior to delivery of the new customer, so weight was light. Boat was rigged with full electronics package (Furuno) with radar on short mast, and 9.9 Suzuki kicker.

The data is very close to what C-Dory has published in the past, stating 800 pounds of fuel, gear and people for their sea trials.

More impressive to me was the numbers at 4000 rpm- roughly 26 mph at 4.5 gph.

You are right those numbers are impressive. I generally cruise between 20-25 in my 22. I have not had the opportunity to look at my numbers as of yet
 
The numbers are from the I-Command Gauge Package on the boat, including GPS Antenna. Fuel data coming directly from the engine's on board computer. As a check, the Furuno GPS antenna is seperate from the I-Command antenna, so I compared speed between the two to be sure they were in agreement.

I took the raw fuel burn and speed numbers and calculated the rest. I could have set the gauges up to give me MPG directly. Pretty impressive gauges.

Water was smooth, and very little wind, so obviously these are "best case" numbers. Our experience with the E-Tecs is that they like to make power, so don't expect a huge drop in numbers once the boat is loaded up.

I also ran this test with neutral tabs but using engine trim. After so much seat time in deep v hulls, I am still amazed at just how sloe these boats plane.

I think the 23 is my favorite of the C-Dory's (although the 255 Tomcat is pretty sweet too).

Nerd tip or not it's so much easier to read...even WITH my glasses. :wink:

I know we're not getting anywhere near comparable speeds @ those rpm's.
 
Still curious to see what the 19p prop will do..........
With the E Tec its bound to be an interesting comparison .........

Before you get too disappointed with your own set up and boat.....

Don't forget those are instantaneous figures, not taken on trips and therefore everyday averages, like you experience in usage and at the gas pump.

    Widely varying water and weather conditions
    2000 mile trip
    600 gallons of fuel

I gotta say, though, if real world experience with that E-Tec can produce anything like the numbers Matt found, it would be awfully tempting to repower. How many 2000 mile trips before the E-Tec pays for itself? (Matt, you'll get a chance to try your salesmanship skills on me soon. I'm saving my money and gearing up for a visit to have some electronics work done.)

Thanks for helping make my point!

Your 200 mile trip using 600 gallons averages 3.33 mpg, which doesn't even appear (that low) on the chart at wide open throttle and 38 mph!

We know some gas is lost starting, idling, at the dock, charging batteries, accelerating, etc., but to try to compare figures like yours to those on the chart is pretty much meaningless.

The only thing left to do is to compare instantaneous figures to instantaneous figures, taken under like circumstances, or to compare real figures like yours to similar ones.

It's not the motor or the prop. It's the superior Cape Cruiser hull design. Better fuel economy and a smoother ride. Try it, you'll like it! Cape Cruiser owners and Ventures owners know what I'm talking about! I'm betting the hull on Dave and Ben's boat will be very similar. It's a natural evolution of the C-Dory hull design.

Those numbers were very impressive 38mph at 5600rpm WOW These 23 's like to run at about 25-30 that seems to be the sweet spot on calm water . MY top speed with a f-115 with a 13 3/4 diam by 15 pitch S/S prop is about 33mph at 5500rpm . I think the E-tek's have a bigger gearcase like the Suzuki they run a 14 1/2 diam prop . MY economy numbers are about the same as the E-tek's I've been getting 4.5-5statute mpg since I bought it 4/08 . The only problem I see with the E-tek's is that you have to mix oil and it is very expensive . and they are very pricey here on the East coast . The best buy's seem to be the Suzuki for repowering . From what i've seen these venture's 23 run the best with the 135 hp.
 
We originally tried a 17" prop, but only got 5200-5300 rpm at WOT, whihc is a bit too low, so we went down to the 15", which seems a great fit.

For comparison, a 22 Definace Pilothouse with a 150 also turns a 15" prop.
 
Boy, those numbers really look good for a 23-footer. I'm only getting 3-3.5 mpg from the old Johnson 90 2-stroke on my 17-foot Arima. I don't suppose anybody has numbers for the 26-footer, 'eh? The Admiral says our next boat will have a full head. So...

My 26' ProAngler has a similar bottom. I am getting 2.7 mpg with a single 200hp Honda 4 stroke. 3800 rpm, 23 mph, 8.5 gph.

We have a Yamaha 150 on a 23' Venture and we average from 2.8 to 3.2 mpg. The best rpm is about 4500 is where we get the 3.2 which usually faster than I care to travel. Loaded with two people with a full water tank and around 40 or 50 gallons of gallons of fuel loaded for cruising, food, dog extra clothes etc. Our top speed according the GPS 42 mph.
