The 27-foot fishing boat Chasin Tale burst into flames and sank to the bottom of the Seward Small Boat Harbor after fueling up early Tuesday morning.
No one was hurt in the fire.
The six-passenger catamaran, owned by Seward-based Silverado Charters, had just taken on 60 gallons of gas at Shoreside Marina Fuels when the boat exploded in flames, said Fire Chief David Squires.
That was about 6:20 a.m. The operator was inside the building writing a gas ticket, Squires said.
Fuel dock managers shut off valves to prevent the fire from spreading through pipes to tanks on shore. The fire also damaged some dock facilities, melting siding on the fuel dock building and warping metal pipes where boats tie off.
The fire's cause is unknown.
The boat's white fiberglass bow stuck out of the water Tuesday afternoon, said deputy harbormaster Jim Lewis. Divers with a salvage company planned to float the boat with air bags so it could be towed away.
Sport anglers are still arriving in the Resurrection Bay town, and the fire didn't slow charter boats, Lewis said. They used another fuel dock in the harbor.
Silverado Charters will fish out the season with its 10-passenger boat, said owner Jeff Barney. The Chasin Tale is a total loss, but it was insured.
"We will live to fish another day," he said. "What can you do? You can't be too broken up about it."
