A few more issues on our boat consideration??

Any of these seem like "red flag" issues?
One of the boats has rust on the exit drain hole from the sink. What would cause that??

One of the boats has a broken bunker on the trailer... I guess the wood platform just broke... Is that a big deal to fix?

One of the boats has the silver plastic film on the Honda completely flaking/stripping off and looks like hell.... can this be fixed?

Lots of rusted lug nuts... I'm thinking this is just usual maintenance?

The hydraulic steering on the Venture seems to have a lot of play in it... we are used to our sailboat diesel steering so we don't know if this is typical outboard or if there is some other issue... I have read on here something about "bleeding" hydraulic steering which sounds simple... is the play in the steering related to the "need to bleed"?

The C-22 is in primo condition but it doesn't have the "right stuff" on it for us...and yet has lots of "stuff" that someone spent a lot of money on for fishing, so that adds to the cost. However if we add and subtract, the boats are priced similarly.

We want to tow these with a 2008 Toyota Sequoia, V8, rated for 8000 lbs.

Both owners are here on C-Brats so I dont' want to ask any questions that point to their boats. They have both been really great to deal with and we think that the best part of choosing a C-Dory is going to be belonging here... how can you value that into any decision??

Thanks again!!

Without seeing it, I'm guessing it isn't rust per se, but the rust color discoloration that a lot of stainless steel stuff gets. Run some Nevr-Dull on it and see if the rusty color goes away.

I'd want to know how the bunk broke. Not a big deal to fix, but a concern, especially if the boat was on the trailer at the time the bunk broke. Sometimes bunks will weaken or split where bolt holes are drilled... a good reason to make sure the bolts in the bunk are not making contact with the boat.

The dealer that services our boat replaced two Honda motor shrouds under warranty because the paint was coming off. He said he had seen a lot of that, and that once it starts, it goes across the whole piece. I would assume you could sand, prime, and paint it. Having seen that, I agree - it looks like hell.

Some de-rust stuff should take care of that. Make sure the lug nuts will come off without breaking the studs.

Could be a leak in the hydraulic system. Usually, you will hear a clicking sound as you turn the wheel if it is low on fluid. Make the resolution of that situation part of the sale. Could be as simple as bleeding, but that isn't all that simple (well, I find that it takes two people to bleed the steering).

Is the owner willing to take any of the fishing gear off in consideration of a lower price? Probably not worth a lot to re-sell, but you could ask. There is a lot to be said for "primo condition."

I don't have any hands-on with the Sequoia, but an 8,000 lb tow rating should handle either of those boats.

The Brats are a very valuable owner resource!

Thanks again!!

Good luck with your decisions!

Best wishes,

A rust colored stain maybe an indication the water from home was high in a mineral such as iron that caused the discoloration. There are products that can be used to remedy the discoloration.

The

flaking on the Honda maybe clear coat, without seeing it, it's just a guess. That maybe a costly repair to have a shop respray the clear. If the Honda is still under the warranty that maybe an item that is covered under such warranty.

Rust on lugs is a normal thing. They are made cheaply, most have pits right from the factory new. I wouldn't worry about lugs. Look at the rest of the trailer, rails, brakes and so forth.

We to wee our Dory with a 2008 v6 4runner with no problems.Your Ute will handle it with no issues.

Keep in mind the Dorys are like the VW of the boat world, no two are alike. This is the pleasure of these boats. Getting one and making it your own. Equipment can be changed to your liking. Also, there is a market for the items you don't want from the newly aquired vessel. You might be able to sell them right here or my good friend Craig could help you...

What Jim Said. I dont see any thing that says run away. I would run a moisture meter over the transom of any boat you are looking at. make sure the drain hole insert is tight and does not spin in the whole.

The bunk is a easy fix but fix it before you trailer the boat anywhere. Most likely one of the bolts rotted out.

You can order the factory paint from honda and repaint the cowling. I did it on the honda 90 of my old boat and it came out great.

I have had a 16,cd22 and a cape cruiser 23 (venture hull) If you are comparing the cd 22 and a venture 23 I would choose the 23 hands down better cockpit space bigger v-berth .You can sit up in v-berth using porta potty .Also much better ride in chop or in following sea. Take a ride in both and then make a decision .
Most of the things you mentioned are cosmetic in nature although not seeing pictures hard to tell? We have a 07 toyota sequoia it pulls and stops the venture 23 no problems . send me pm and we can talk about different ride and handling of both boats . Jiim

It could be related to air in the system. Its a simple enough process to bleed it. I had a lot of play in my Sea Star hydraulic steering (turning the wheel very slowly would result in no or little motor movement.) I bled the system and although the steering felt a bit better, the problem still existed.

I fixed the problem by cleaning and "tuning" both check valves on the pump (which is the steering column). The pump has to be disconnected and removed in order to clean the check valves. Not a difficult job, but takes some planning to not make a mess. My steering was as good as new afterward.
