A little rant about Mercury parts :)

So, we have a 2006 Mercury 50, and a new Mercury 5hp. We were changing out fuel lines and fittings to go to a new portable 6 gal gas tank. Every site we went to said to buy the Mercury male fitting (as pictured in the right of this photo). So we did, several times.

NO way did they fit to the black female fitting in the upper left of the photo, which fits perfectly to the original fittings on both the Merc 50 and Merc 5. So based on the few measurements we could find, we decided to buy the FiveOceans FO4408, which is advertised as fitting PRE 1998 Mercury motors. Fits perfectly (although we haven't tested the leak factor yet). You can see the huge size difference in the photo. This is not the first long road we've gone down for parts on the Mercury, what can be so hard? Maybe I'm missing something :) Future project: quick connects :)

Not sure if it's part of the problem, but I believe Tohatsu actually manufacturers those motors. At least I'm pretty sure it does the kicker motor, as Tohatsu is the manufacturer of a number of the smaller outboards, and then they are rebranded by the other companies. Colby

thanks Colby, yes, I'm aware of that, but it doesn't explain why various manufacturers advertise parts as fitting certain Mercury models, when they don't. At least we finally found one :)

If the boat was not new to you then you can not be sure that the connectors on the motors are the right ones. Went down this path a boat once. owner had honda on the boat and then replaced with a merc. Instead of changing the connectors on the gas lines ( factory crimped lines) he changed the connector on the motor to a honda connector. The size of the threads on almost all of these motors is the same. Its the other side that is different. Hope that helps.

thanks, but the (2006) motor is original to the boat, and the kicker is new, they both have the same connections. The only fitting we could find for the tank connection to match the fittings on the motors was a fitting for a PRE 1998 mercury. Doesn't make sense :)
