A new C-Ranger

Never owned the Raymarine system, but we've had 2 Garmins on our boats and love them. They are very easy to use as mentioned above, and IMHO the graphics are better. I think it boils down to whichever one you like the best because they are all good, really. Hop on some folks boats and play with both brands and decide for yourself which one is better for you.

An interesting sideline on the Garmin and Lowrance units - Garmin is made in Kansas and, when I called the tech support for my Lowrance iFinder, I got to talk to a nice college student in Oklahoma who took the time to ask how the weather was up here, etc.. Quite a change from the normal India/Pakistani tech links so common nowadays...

We requested a C-80 for our new CR-25, but learned from Jeff that they aren't set up to install that at the Ranger Tug factory. They only have cutouts for the C-120. We would have prefered the C-80 - it is plenty big enough and the C-120 display is partially blocked from view by the shelf when you sit up straight (and you are tall - don't ask me how tall). You would need to arrange installation at the dealer, or on your own.

Hi Mac,
Thanks for sharing what you are doing because we have an order for a June delivery date on a C-Ranger. Any thing else that you have learned would be great to hear about and we can share what we have opted for. We are in Marysville so it will be nice to have another tug in the area.

John

Thanks John - look forward to meeting you. We're pretty much committed on outfitting since the boat is currently being assembled. Still waivering on the generator - currently the vote is no, and would love to get more info on the aft cockpit cover but they haven't made one yet.

In case you haven't had a chance to sea trail or visit the fatory, I posted the pics when we joined Kirby & gang (C-Sick) down at Fife for a sea trial, and also when we visited the factory. They are in our album.

Don't know, but I would guess not. I know they bought a bunch of the C-120 units and that's how they calculated their pricing. And their cutout templetes. I'd suggest you ask Jeff or John - Jeff is the Factory Guy email address at Ranger Tugs

We are only offering Ray Marine electronics at this time. We have an OEM agreement with Ray Marine and are trained on the installation of their electronics. The thought was to offer at least some electronic package at the factory level. The trick is to keep it relatively the same from one boat to the next from a manufacturing standpoint. There are many excellent electronics on the market today including Garmin.

Thank you,

Ranger Jeff

I have been very pleased with the C-120 on our Ranger 25. I'm not tall so there hasn't been a problem with seeing the top of the screen. But for those that are tall, you can put the data strip on the right side rather than the top which should help. I really like the big screen, especially when keeping multiple windows open.

Hi C-Brats,
They finally let me back on line. I been wanting to tell you all about the Mis Dee. Took her out for a shake down cruise yesterday. A real joy. The auto pilot worked great. The C-80 was a winner. Launch was easy and instead off renting a slip for three days for moving on stores we loaded it back on the trailer. Slip was going to be $40.00 bucks a night.

The tack was acting up and warning buzzer sounded off a few times. The heat gauge never left the 105 degree mark so I will be checking with Yanmar.
Top speed was 17.5 MPH. Pedal to the metal. At 3400 it run like a sewing machine at 12 to 13 MPH. 4 people aboard.

Pulling the keel plug, only about about a 1/4 gallon came out. Course the bilge pump was on. didn't taste it , so I don't know if it was salt or fresh.

Don't trust the techs about their answers to your questions when you are buying the 1st C-ranger they have ever seen. Plus it must have been the 1st diesel sold at this marina. They said the packing leaks on the drive shaft and it is suppose to , but taste told me it was fresh water. I am pretty sure it was from wash down. It was bone dry at launching.
Friday will be departure date for the Keys.

Congratulations on a successful shakedown cruise. Cruising in the Keys is mighty fine. The CR-25 should be a great boat for that area.

Have a great time and keep us posted!

Best wishes,
Jim B.

Thanks for keeping us up to date. I sure will be interested in hearing what you learn about the source of the water in the boat. I'm going to visit the Factory on Monday the 12th, and would like to be able to follow up with John & Jeff then. Our boat is in process - hoping for the end of the month

Enjoy the Keys!

Congratulations on your new C-Ranger Tug and thank you for your business. Yanmar may have installed the wrong sending units for the engine temp and the oil pressure. Did you happen to notice what the oil pressure gauge was reading? We can set up warranty service with any Yanmar dealer and can confirm that the correct parts are in stock before you arrive. We can perform a Yanmar dealer search based on a zip code. That is if you are in one place long enough. :D As for the alarm.... Did you notice any dummy lights coming on? The engine alarm should always be accompanied bya dummy light.

Let me know how we can help,

Jeff

Ranger Jeff,
Marine Pro in Cocoa saved the day for me yesterday. Marc ( One of the owners) made a space for me in their busy scheduel and had a young fellow by the name of Brett meet us at seven in the morning at their shop. We left the boat with them to have breakfast. By the time we were done eating, he call and told us what he had found. The cabin heat was tapped into the cooling line for the turbo causing the turbo to heat up. It was'nt getting enough cooling water. That was what the buzzer was all about. It got hot enough to burn a little paint off the turbo. The sending unit was replaced for engine heat because it wasn't working. I guess the engine heat indicator does not tell you if the turbo is hot. Brett machined a restrictor in the cabin heat line and solved the problem. It is a pleasure to do bussiness with a company that knows all about their products. Honda never did solve my problem with one of the 40 horse on the Hunky Dory. One Dealer in Libby, Montana screwed the engine up so bad it wouldn't run at all. It cost another $280 in Florida to get it running again.

Jeff, Thank you for the quick come back on these problems. One thing I really need is a book for the sirius radio in the boat. We allready subscribe to Sirius. What is in the radio and what do I need to do to receive their signel with what I got? As you know I have no book on the
c-Ranger at all. It is hard to find things for service or to know how to fix these water in the bilge problems with out a layout diagram. John sent me some pictures by e-mail. But that is like looking through a keyhole and trying to get the whole picture. I know you guys are working on a book and a sulution to the bilge problem.

I think the Ranger 25 is going to be a great boat. It sure is getting a lot of attention down here in Florida. People are taking pictures and asking a lot of questions. You guys ought to plan on a bird dog fee for us owners selling a lot of boats for the factory. What do the rest of the Tug Thugs think about that?
We now plan on departing on Sat. morning. We will keep in touch.
I'll see if I can remember how to post some pictures.

Jeff,
I found a manuel for the Sat radio on line. Solved that problem. The sat receiver is built in. All I got to do is contract with them to turn it on .
Thanks
Darrel

Glad to see you...and others are enjoying your Tug Darrel. If you are departing today, Sat,.... where are you heading next? If ya drag around a bit...you could join us on the Cumberland River last weekend in April.... or.... just leave your truck there and drive the boat around... It is do-able.

I had a few funny things happen with the pannel on my Yanmar QM30 (non-turbo) but found that it was due to not having the pannel grounded to the motor.... once I grounded the pannel all the gauges started working better.... (my tug is a Sea Horse not a Ranger)

Patrick,
Thanks for the invite, but we will need to get back to Montana fairly early. I have been wanting to go on up to Alaska. Wife is starting to lay down some rules. You probably know how that goes. Today is Sat. and we are still in Mims. In the morning we will leave from Titusville heading for the Keys. Ya, I know I have been saying that for a couple of days......This time I found one battery bank that only showed 7 volts. They are being charged right now. No book come with this boat so I don't know how the switches are wired. They should have been charging during the shakedown cruise.
If Jeff reads this post maybe he can tell me about the engineering of this thing. Another question I would ask is;

Hey Jeff what is the strange noise my wife hears and my buddy also, ( that has good hearing) says sounds like " click..click..click..click..etc. Than the clicks go much faster and than silence. This noise is there with all power shut off. The sound comes from around the hot water heater on the starboard side. I cannot hear it in the shower hole in the deck. It comes aft of that location. What ever it is must be running the battery down
captd

For the clicks, I would look for either a relay, or a pump. Sometimes a water pump which has a very small water leak will give a series of clicks.

Many electric fuel pumps also use a selonid for the pump to move a diaphram.

7 Volts didn't do that battery any good. You might consider either monitering the batteries on a very regular basis--as well as turning the batteries off with a switch or circuit breaker when not using the boat. You can put an ampmeter in series with the battery positive cable and find out how much current draw there is.

I would be a little nervous about taking any water from the turbo cooling--and consider moving the heat source for the cabin heating system to another location....An over heated turbo can be a major and expensive problem. I don't think that the C Rangers have a pyrometer, but it might be a good idea to put one in. This will measure the temp of the exhaust gas (and if you put it after the turbo, it will also give an indication of the turbo cooling). The insertion of the pyrometer before the turbo will also give very good information. The pyrometer might be a good idea if you are spinning the engine up to get semi planning speeds, which puts much more stress on the engine.
