All that stuff I need to mount up top

Hi Mike,

The spotlight is a Jabsco 135 SL Remote Control Spotlight. You can see it in some of our photos. Here's one:

With a light mounted there you will get some glare off the railings and deck. Unless the light is way aft, or up very high, there will be glare and some loss of night vision. I recently had a long discussion with a friend of mine who is a professional delivary skipper about how many boaters don't realize how easy it is to loose the night vision. This was not only about spotlights, but also having too many screens, and too bright screens in front of the helmsman.

As for a SS mount in front of the hand rail of the Tom Cat--I cannot render asthetic judgement until I see it, but there may be some practical considerations. Leakage is not a problem with antennas and cables if you use the proper fittings to bring the cables thru the cabin top. You still have to bring cables thru the front of the cabin, if you bring them in front of, or thru the brow. But I would wonder about the weight and lever arm when the radar is either up or down in the position for storage. Trailering may also be an issue. You want an 8 foot antenna, and it will be better served by having it ratchet aft, than laying forward. If necessary you can lay the antenna into a piece of foam and even tie it to a hand rail or have a fitting it lays into.

This is what I had in mind, the base made with 1/4" stainless. It might look better with a dinghy on top.

Interesting....except it looks like the front of the pedestal is hanging over the forward brow. I think the footprint of the pedestal should ideally be flush against the roof. Also, if the wires come through the brow you would have to drill a second set of holes to get the wires inside to the fuse panel. On the roof you would only have to drill once to pass them through.

I wouldn't work for me, but it's your boat! :)

Nice photoshopping by the way, are you a graphic artist?

No, not a graphic artist but have to do a bit for work. I could actually do a lot better if I spent more than 5 minutes on it.

Is it the look of it in that position you don't like or something else? I am mostly concerned with function rather than form but I like things to look reasonably nice too.

I will place the tower immediately in front of the handrail up there.

For me, having it suspended forward of the cabintop would just look odd. Or am I misunderstanding what you are planning?

By the way, I totally get it that function is most important. Still, I can get a bit caught up on form. I be starting another thread here in a few minutes about just such a thing. :)

My plan was to mount the hinge at the bottom of the radar tower just ahead of the forward hand rail but I might decide it could go just behind the rail. In that spot, I would need to raise the hinge high enough so that the tower would tip over the rail when tilting it forward. Definitely doable but some extra work.

I ordered the 1" stainless for my rack and davit system today. Alaska Copper and Brass had a good price on .062" polished. A 20' stick was $112. Not sure if I got a wholesale price or what but it seemed reasonable.

Either way, you will have to be drilling bolt holes thru the cabin top. You will probably have to remove the electronics shelf to get in and do the backing plate properly. I am concerned about support when the radar is upside down--what is going to cushion the tower and dome? You want it "locked" in place.

Asthetics--I think it will look a bit strange, but do-able. I am still a bit concerned about putting a lot of weight up on top of these boats--and you may not be putting as much as I envision. (disclaimer--I have an RV AC unit on top of mine--but the WC radar supoport is very light weight!.
