AM/FM Radio Reception

I installed an AM/FM/CD stereo a couple of years ago and used one of those Shakespeare AM/FM-VHF splitters for the stereo antenna. It allows you to connect your stereo antenna to the 8' VHF antenna. However, I've never been able to get many radio stations, especially AM. It seems I only get the closest FM stations and virtually no AM. Is this typical?

I put a splitter on Two Lucky Fish wih the short 4 ft antenna and it helped a ton. AM & FM. I never did solve the interference problem on AM from the chart plotter/gps however. I'll bet Tim fixes it though...

I use one of those Shakespeare AM/FM-VHF splitters .
My AM reception is fine.
Maybe there is corrosion at your splitter??

I used the starboard window frame for a antenna and ran cable to the
antenna plug on the am/fm radio. I was interested in good am signals
and I got what I wanted. Interference from the plotter,radar and depth
sounder is another story. Some stations have signals from the C80
but the worst one is on Coast Guard 22A. I am sure others have same

I use a 6 ft "T" wire ($6 Radio Jap special) and get decent, actually pretty good reception, AM/FM. I strung it along the bundle of wires above the front windows -- thinking about it, maybe it coupled to the bundle of wires!
 
I went ahead and put a full size 8' AM/FM antenna up. Works well. Was
it worth it? I don't know. Looks cool :-) Matches the VHF on the other
side of the roof.

Launched the boat today and got to use it for real. Worked really
well. I was able to get very clear reception of a station that
is iffy in a car. It was a bit cool, so we shut the back door, we hear
the stereo really well up front. Pretty neat.
