An introduction

Hi, folks. I'm new here and thought I would introduce myself. My name is Mike Garrett. I live just a few miles from Asheville, NC, and in a few weeks I'll be the owner of a C-Dory 22 Angler. The dealer called yesterday afternoon and told me they should receive the boat from the builder next Friday. It will take them a couple of weeks to get the boat rigged and a few things I wanted added installed, then I'll be on my way to pick it up. So, after 25 years or so of wishing I'll finally be a C-Dory owner.

My first look at a C-Dory came in an envelope from Capt. Jim Orrell of Texas Dory Boat Plans, Galveston, TX, in June of 1986. I had ordered a set of plans for a 20' Carolina Dory and he included several pages of advertisements for other plans he offered. Two of those pages included photos and descriptions of C-Dory boats, the 16 Angler and 22 Angler, although he called them “World Boat/Sampan Express.” I have no idea if he was associated with C-Dory in any way, if he was selling plans from the original designer or C-Dory, or if he just used C-Dory's advertisements to showcase similar plans he offered. I've uploaded the flyers to the Documents Forum in a .pdf format for anyone interested.

Those advertisements caught my attention. Light weight, low powered, shallow draft, and simple, all things I liked in a boat. Over the next few years I read a couple of magazine articles about C-Dory boats and thought they would be quite good for a store bought boat but they were out of my price range since I was making a living as a police officer. I eventually saw a couple of C-Dories, one on a trailer on I-95 and another on Pamlico Sound. Both at a distance so I couldn't get a good look but I did like what I saw.

Fast forward to 1998, I had changed jobs and transferred to the mountains of NC. I found myself boatless for the first time in 20 years. But, I had other interests and was working too many hours to even begin entertaining the idea of a boat. Then came retirement. So far it's the best job I've ever had. I have spent the last five years traveling all over the U.S., mostly on a motorcycle. Last winter, when it was too cold to ride much, I started thinking about building another boat. Specifically, that 20' Carolina Dory. I had lofted it back in '86 and built the frames when I got side tracked with work and raising kids. There just wasn't time to finish it. So, I dug out those old plans and began to study them again. But I kept going to those two pages of advertisements featuring the C-Dory boats.

Searching the internet for information on C-Dory led me to this site. This site led me to purchasing a C-Dory. It's all your fault. Thanks!!!

Welcome aboard. You have kept the dream -- and now, retired, can hopefully track out a new route into the future (like you said, best "job" you have had. Think of the possibility of living aboard for some extended cruising along that wonderful Carolina coast. Such a different lifestyle than life ashore, and the view of the world from the water toward land can be such a marvelous change of perspective. As a former policeman, you understand prudence and the benefit of having redundant backups -- perhaps a marine life style for some extended periods of time (maybe just a few weeks at a time) will give a new "zip" to the retired lifestyle. Bon voyage with your new boat. We look forward to hearing some interesting tales of your experience with a C-Dory.

I lived in Western North Carolina for 10 years (specifically Hendersonville). I didn't own a C Dory back then, but we did have a little bow rider with a complete canvas enclosure. We would overnight on all of the regional lakes.

I can easily see where you are going to enjoy a C Dory while exploring all of those waterways in your area. Enjoy!

Welcome aboard--you have some great lakes, and not too far to the ICW and banks. We were up that way last year, and it is beautiful country!

Enjoy the new boat.

Welcome aboard, Mike! I hope you will find that it has been worth the wait, especially since retirement means you have the time to really enjoy the new boat. Sounds like you will have plenty in common with other Brats here - traveling, motorcycles, and a desire to wander! (Although we haven't figured out a way to carry the motorcycle on the boat. )

We'll look forward to some photos and stories!

Best wishes,
Jim B.

Welcome Mike! Went through Asheville last fall on the way to Brasstown (John C. Campbell Craft School), H.S in Charlotte, College in Raleigh. Bring the boat up to the Bay here and explore. You'd be welcome at our pier and to power and water!

I'll just add a quick welcome aboard. This group has some great ideas and tricks that will help you enjoy your new CD. All you have to do is ask and they will help!

My 22 Angler, Glenda Jean, has left the factory and is at the dealer. I'll be picking her up in a couple of weeks. I'm really looking forward to it.

I really like twins, when someone else is buying them. I think I'll stick with the single 90. :thup

Welcome Mike,

The C-Dory 22, a good choice...
Plenty of room for the family, with a protective cabin and low operating cost.

You might want to share with us what your plans are?
What do you fish for, what are your cruising plans if any?

My plans are simple, lots of fishing and exploring. Much of my time will be spent on Pamlico Sound with some near shore fishing in the ocean off of NC. It's been close to 15 years since I sold my last boat before moving to the mountains of NC. Since then my boating has been limited to other people's boats, going when and where they wanted. And, being retired now, there will be time to explore more coastal areas to the north, south, and west.

As far as what I fish for, it really depends on what is biting. I'm not picky when it comes to catching fish. Nearly all of what I catch I release since I'm not a big fish eater. I'll catch them again on the next trip. I've given away far more fish than I've taken home over the years. I just enjoy catching them.

As far as where I'll explore, well, most anywhere I can float the boat. "Hmmm, I've never been there..." is a perfectly valid excuse to go anywhere.

Hi, Great Story and Plans, Hope to see you on the water somewhere, we go to a C-Dory Cruise at Oriental NC every fall, maybe you can join in on the fun. Where did you purchase your C-Dory? We purchased ours from Mobile East Marine, great people to deal with. We have really enjoyed our 22 Cruiser. (We live in Westfield NC about 50 miles north of WS) Jim Jessup

Hi Mike, welcome to C-Brats and congratulations on your new vessel. You live in a beautiful part of the country. In the early 60's I attended Warren Wilson College in Swannanoa.
