Are you hunkering down?

Oh I understand. But I don’t think there’s any credible doubt where this Particular disease came from, or why some would seek to sow ill feelings in describing it for that matter.

When we decide what we believe , then seek to backfill our positions with selective “facts”, it may be an indication we’re starting to breathe our own vapors. l’ll admit occasional guilt in this regard.

Time to go for a ( safely distanced) walk outside?

The popularized connotation of the racist term China Virus and the equally obnoxious Kung Flu started with our president. The racist context of these terms was no doubt circulating among certain groups before but they were promulgated by Trump.

Covid 19 is not a "them against us" situation. We need to be working with anyone or any country that can help to get us back to normal.

100 years ago the Spanish Flu killed 50 million people around the world. Should we change the name now that some people feel it is not PC? In fact the flu did not even originate in Spain.

Martin.

PS. What has this thread got to do with \hunkering down' ?

When was the last time you heard someone say "Get out of my country you effing Spaniard".

I guess threads evolve depending on what the posters think is relevant.

Just stop already please! Let’s get back on topic and leave our political views at the door. I got sucked in a few times on this thread, I have apologized and am now biting my tongue along with others I’m sure.
Go get some fresh air and keep up the social distance advisements!
Happy Easter.

some years ago I was doing contact tracing during a measles epidemic. I soon found two clusters it came from that spread throughout NJ were from an REO concert in Philadelphia and a Christian Science summer camp in North Carolina.
these were not cases of" herd immunity" but rather "herd susceptibility" and "waning immunity". Stay hunkered down and stay safe. I for one am skeptical of any other theories.

Apparently it was called "Spanish Flu" because the Spanish were the only ones accurately reporting the effects and death toll. It started during WWI and other countries were not being upfront about the effects of this flu.

Wikipedia:
To maintain morale, World War I censors minimized early reports of illness and mortality in Germany, the United Kingdom, France, and the United States. Newspapers were free to report the epidemic's effects in neutral Spain, such as the grave illness of King Alfonso XIII, and these stories created a false impression of Spain as especially hard hit. This gave rise to the name Spanish flu. Historical and epidemiological data are inadequate to identify with certainty the pandemic's geographic origin, with varying views as to its location.

Hunkering down as well - 3 weeks not out of the house except for dog walks. Was well prepared except for "active yeast" so substituting with baking soda and lemon juice. We have lemon trees so are good there. May run low on flour soon as well. Finally went out yesterday to an ACE hardware for some joint compound- 6 ft apart in lines, most wearing masks (I have a respirator), but seemed otherwise "normal". Went to marina as well and gave boat a wash-down. Surprisingly, the local bait store was open on the CA delta.

Fortunately, I am able to work from home, so can still pay the bills etc.. Hopefully, the job will be secure for getting through this event. US is coming in well under the original 2.5million and then 250k then 110k deaths etc... Latest at 60k is barely double an average flu season. But statistics aren't popular - now it is "more total deaths in US than Italy" with no per capita disclosure.

How long can you hold the economy down before you see other ramifications with mental health, depression, etc... It seems we may no longer be able to make a cost benefit decision. Ideally, we should be able to make a reasonable decision to open the economy with restrictions like wearing masks (or get a fine), no large gatherings, better isolation at restaurants and sanitization at events (managed with temperature taken on entry). But it is like corporate security - you can never be "safe enough" and then you get mired in unproductive bureaucratic process, etc... Fun times. It is always hard to argue against ANYTHING that entails risk - especially with the impact of even one life.

If you haven't done it already, certainly add your credit card to your phone. Most retailers can take a "tap" for payment and if you only put a credit card in you shouldn't have to put in a PIN or touch the device at all. Most retailers are getting rid of the approval prompt and any signature requirements as well. Those that don't - move on to another retailers that "gets it".

I hope no one allows themselves to be mislead by this massively ill-informed statement.

It's a bit like a weather forecaster saying that a hurricane will hit Miami and 1,000,000 windows will be smashed in if home owners do nothing. Then given the warning, most folks nail plywood over their windows. Once it turns out that only 10,000 windows actually got smashed after the hurricane passes, some ill-informed "expert" blames the weather forecaster for being off by a factor of 100.

In South Africa, weather forecasters can be liable if their forecast is wrong.

FYI......misleading information.

The facts are that the South African Weather Service Amendment Act of 2013 states that it is against the law to publish or distribute “in any manner whatsoever any severe weather warning” which is believed or suspected “to be false or misleading”.

So in South Africa a weather forecaster is not liable for wrong forecasts. The law only applies to someone issuing or spreading false or misleading severe weather alerts. (BTW, I seem to remember someone in this country doing exactly that recently with a black Sharpie.)

Facts matter.

The longer the thread, the greater the chance that there will be flaming.
The longer the shut down, the grumpier some of us get.
The longer the line anywhere, the less likely I will stand in it.

krc, excellent post & not misinforming at all. As one who has read extensively on the information going into the modeling by the different agencies making the varying projections, I recommend others do to. In the meanwhile if you feel the desire to read this thread, it may help to keep a sharp eye out on the post made here for sway to a particular political view instead of how we can all better adapt to this situation.

You can look at stat agencies for past pandemics and flu seasons. Just look at the number for comparison to what we are seeing with covid-19 today.

https://www.statnews.com/2018/09/26/cdc ... hs-winter/

And - select your country for covid 19.

https://www.statnews.com/2020/03/26/cov ... cv_landing

Etc...

My point is not that hunkering down was not a good idea - it was and I did so. The distancing along with limiting flights and good health care practices have helped (along with drug treatments that may be more helpful than originally thought). But at this point, with the revision downward so substantially, where do you decide to allocate resources for society? Perhaps we are ready for opening up the economy. I expect we will see states open up around May 1 just as other countries are doing.

And, btw, it was the college of london predicting US death toll of close to 2.25 million without any mitigation efforts. And, they will be right if no vaccine is developed as this will recur year after year after year... and say 5 years at 30k still nets you 150k dead. Do we drop the economy for 5 years? Of course not - we must adjust.

If you are rich, elderly, retired, and able to ride it out then you are all for continuing to grind the economy to a halt for your own security. I get that. But perhaps that is not the best for society as a whole.

And, I think this is a good discussion. This is about risk management and how as a country /society/ world we view these tradeoffs of risks: deaths of mainly the elderly vs economic recession / depression vs social impacts to churches/companies/merchants and impacts to youth as well as propensity in down economic times to revert to drugs/theft/crime.

I was just sharing what I was doing for hunkering down... wish I had some live yeast though and some more flour! :)

Just finished my shift at UWMC today. We currently have less than 10 Covid+ patients admitted at the main hospital where I work, and less than 100 in the entire system. Thank heaven we were never overwhelmed, and it appears to be waning. The nursing staff and doctors have been stellar; I'm proud to call myself their colleague. Our PPE began to run low almost immediately. I trust our hospital administrators will maintain an appropriately larger stock in the future, as this sort of thing is likely to happen again. The initial fear and stress in the hospital staff has been replaced by a professional understanding that increased social distancing and stricter infection control procedures will likely be a permanent thing. (and we were already very strict with infection control to begin with). Overall census has been kept low to handle a surge which largely failed to materialize, at least to the extent originally feared. I'm guessing we'll begin to increase our non-Covid acute admissions fairly soon, assuming another week or two of relative calm. The sun is shining brightly here in Seattle, with a fresh North wind blowing small whitecaps on Puget Sound. Lots of people out walking and biking, many with masks on, almost all keeping a safe distance. I think we're going to make it.

Happy Easter to everyone!

Westward, That is good news, and thank you for what you are doing there. The last few nights on the news they have been showing all the blue lights, support for the medical professionals. Salute :!:

Three cheers (heck, 18 cheers) to you and all your colleagues! Worldwide! You are the true heroes of 2020! I hope we never take you for granted again, but knowing humans, we probably will.....but I bet we will never forget the bravery and commitment of our health professionals during this trying time.

P.S. It must be greatly satisfying too.....it's why you chose to go into health care after all. BRAVO!!!!!

On this Easter day knowing I could not go to church nor gather with family I decided to bake big breakfast pizzas and take some to my two sisters and brother. The weather was beautiful here on the Puget Sound so we met outside and admired gardens during short walks, kept our social distances. It will be an Easter we remember.

Hunkering down, i have spent more time on YouTube in the last few weeks that I have the whole rest of my life. The link above that covered the Tug boat captains day was interesting for me. And right behind that one was this one about the Columbia River Bar Pilots.

I know there is probably a thread with videos on this stuff, so sorry for not chasing that down, but if you are hunkered down here and want some interesting maritime video, here you go.
