Armstrong Motor Bracket

Has anyone put an Armstrong Motor Bracket on a C-dory? The Caledon 25 has one molded in as part of the hull, makes for lots of cockpit room and does away with the need for a big splash well. The RF246's often have one in place of the I/O drive. Nicest one I have even seen was a custom on an RF246 that had steps into the water on both sides (all welded in aluminum and full width). If you have pics of a C-dory with a bracket, add them to your post!

Pictures in his album are great. That is one nice piece or workmanship. I think many would pay extra at the factory level to add this feature - the way he did the cockpit really shows the benefit of a bracket.

I like the work he had done as well. He didn't, however, gain any more cockpit space. That large storage well where the splashwell used to be appears to be one of his main goals. Here's Billy's post about the hull extension: http://www.c-brats.com/viewtopic.php?t=3119&highlight=billy

I'd imagine that the addition of a bracket would allow you to remove the existing splashwell and lazarettes, providing about 22-inches additional space in the cockpit at the sheerline. Seems like a lot of expense for a relatively small gain in space. The current 22' Angler has 6'4" of cockpit space fore and aft vs. the Cruiser with 4'6". Unless one needs that extra coupla feet in the cabin the Angler might be a more cost-effective option.

Or, you could do something crazy like adding four feet to an old Classic...

One other advantage of a bracket is allowing for a transom door- stepping onto a platform and through a door is WAY more convenient than clambering over the side, particularly if you have limited mobility or - for instance - a large dog.

And an effective increase in hull length incurs a variety of benefits and costs.

Anyway, since on a CD the fuel tanks are under the splashwell, I doubt you'd be able to gain any additional square footage.

Don't forget the fuel tanks are under the splashwell, so you can't reclaim that cockpit space. At least not easily.

That's a nicely done conversion.

Of course, there's saddle tanks. I've got two 24-gallon Moeller's that'll be mounted under a widened gunwale with the fore-end about 24-inches aft of the cabin wall. But then, I'll have about eight-feet of cockpit behind the cabin and three and a half feet of lazarettes and splashwell. For only two feet of additional cockpit space and losing storage too boot it would seem a lot of expense for slight return. But then, everyone has their particular use and interest and tweaking these boats can be a lot of fun.

Of course the TomCats come with an Amstrong bracket as standard. In this case (with the fuel tanks in the sponsons), you really do gain some extra cockpit space.

Bob,
My 26' ProAngler has an Armstrong bracket with a 200 HP & 9.9 HP Hondas on it.
Look at my album photo 42 on P.2 & photo 54, 55 & 56 on P.3.
It will give you an idea of how it works on my boat.
Hope it helps you out.
Jack
