Attaching stuff - fuel tanks, fishing poles, etc

After my shakedown cruise on my new CD 16 I immediately starting thinking about modifications (of course). Several of these involve attaching various things to the hull and, as I am an epic klutz when it comes to do-it-yourself projects, I would like to do so using sturdy but perhaps not quite permanent methods.

First up is securing the fuel tank. The tank doesn't move much but I would like it to not move at all! I've considered everything from adhesive backed velcro to..well, you really don't want know some of the other ideas. Certainly other brats have secured their fuel tanks, right?

Once the fuel is handled, it's time to have some fun so I'll be needing a fishing pole or two. Ideally, something like a removable 3M adhesive strip on rod storage holders would work so I can move them around until I find the perfect location. I certainly don't want to drill holes for such a simple need.

Well, I hope this goes better than your sail-making adventures... people are still talking about that guy who sewed his fingers together!! :shock:

I'm kidding, guys. We generally don't let my buddy Tom around power tools, though... oh, the humanity! :roll:

For some temporary fits, check around for suction mounting brackets. That would give you the opportunity to try 'em in different places. I'm not sure where the tank sits in the 16, but is there a good place to attach a strap so you can strap it in place, but still move it to fill? Or tab in some fiberglass brackets that would hold the tank in place, but still allow you to lift it over the tabs to access.

I have no doubt that you will hear from other 16 owners who have done mods to their boats that will give you good info.

For your fuel tank you might consider getting some star board or PVC boards and cut 1-1/2 inch strips in lengths needed to frame in your fuel tank. Use marine adhesive to attach the strips to the deck. Might check West Marine or Wally World for rod holders that clamp to your canopy frame.

And do as many of us have done in the past (and still do); and that is scan the photos of projects on this site and copy or adapt them to your Dory.

Across the stern I have two batteries in boxes and two six gallon gas tanks. Each item is strapped down and then shimmed in between the item and the dri deck. The only stainless screws are for the belt loops The gas tank against the port bulkhead is positioned with the handle facing forward and the tank pushed all the way back . The other gas tank is wedged lengthwise between the outside tank and the inside battery, This gives a nice tight fit to all the items and leaves room for the bilge pump in the stern. The only rod holders I have are similar to these. Mine come apart easily and the top part is stored on the shelf when not fishing.I have one at each rear corner of the cockpit.

Making "cleats" out of wood would be a good plan for the fuel tanks. The problem with Starboard, is that is is difficult to "glue" with sealants like 5200--otherwise it is a great material.
