Axle Ratios

When I bought the F350 in 2012 there were two axle ratios and two tire/rim sizes. The higher number axle ratio came with 18" rims and the lower number ratio came with 20" rims. The effective ratio turned out to be the same for both combinations.

Steve, I'll have to look at the display and get back to you.

I'm in the process of putting a 2015 5.0 Coyote engine in a '51 Ford F1 Panel truck I'm restoring. Paired with a 4R75E transmission and a '72 Ford 9" 3.5 rear end and 16" rims. I hope I can get over 20 MPG.

Well, in time I'll let you all know. I went for it. 2016 F150 Super Crew cab 4x4 with the 5.5 box (145"wb) 5.0L, 3.31 gearing. Fleet rental trade in with 20,000 mi. No tow package, but I'll put a hitch and wire in a 7-pin plug with electric brake controller. Kept the Highlander and traded in the wife's CRV. So we have a spare tow vehicle if needed. :D Colby

Thought I'd resurrect this thread with the outcome. A few days ago I traded in that 2016 F150 for a 2019 F150, with pretty much the same set up. 5.0L V8 with 3.31 gearing. The newer one with a 10 speed tranny as opposed to the 6 speed in the 2016. Also came with the Tow package.

The 2016 worked flawlessly towing the 5100 lb CD-22 over the Midwest, Rockies and other mountains out west. Running without trailer, at 80 mph out west, I was getting around 19.5 mpg. Back at 70 and slower, I could get 22.x mpg. Towing, depending upon the wind and mountain range, anywhere from 9-13.4 mpg. Average flat land no wind seemed to come in around 12.3. Pulling the boat up the Rockies with the 2016, there were times the tranny would shift all the way down to 2nd gear, while running 65. Because it was sitting just under red line, I would let up on the peddle and slow to 60. It'll be interesting to see where the 10 speed in the 2019 downshifts to. The F150 felt very solid pulling the CD-22. I did install a standard Tekonsa Electric Brake Controller, which also worked well with my tandem axle electric brakes. With the new truck, I elected to go with Ford's Electric Brake Controller. Hope it works as well. The new truck also has the Electric Locking rearend, something my 2016 didn't have, and a factory backup camera. I added a backup camera to my 2016, but don't think the aftermarkets are ever as good as the original factory installed units. I expect the electric locking rearend will help on slippery ramps or starting up on icy roadways. (As the non locking rearend on the 2016 basically became 1-wheel drive on anything slippery, unless I locked in 4WD.) Colby

I'm not sure I'd really need the oil cooler or larger radiator that also comes as part of the tow pkg. I kind of suspect that is more for pulling closer to max load in warmer climates.

I never heard a truck owner say "I have too much cooling capacity."...!!! That is the cheapest upgrade you can buy. Price out a new transmission!

I agree, but that was on the 2016, which ended up working out fine. I'm pretty sure the 2019 comes with all that since it has the "tow package" included. Then again, one never knows without crawling under and looking. :) Colby

For the first time Marie spun the tires of a vehicle pulling a C Dory out of the water when we hauled out at St John's River this year. I suspect the Yukon had much more weight in the rear than the Ford 250.(even with the locking rear axle) She popped it in 4x and pulled right on out. The boat was not all of the way up on the trailer, so the tongue weight was not "available" when pulling out. This is not the first case of a pickup being light and spinning rear wheels I have seen. Marie could see the truck sliding back down into the river--I reassured her that the thrust of the outboard would prevent that, if it started to slide....!!
(we use the EarTec 2 way communication system--a real wife saver!!

Colby we have the 2018Expedition with the Ecoboost V-6 and a3.31 rear end We pull our CC23venture about 5500lb no problem at all Coming back from Hontoon we got almost 16mpg using the tow mode
With your 2019 truck look into the Timbren Srs rear helper bumper stops that will help with your new cd-25 Good luck with that also Take care Jim

BTW my friend has a truck camper on a F150 he replaced the air bags and put the Timbrens on He said night and day difference

Hey Jim,
Had them on my 2016, and pulled them back off putting the original axle stops back on, before trading it in. Several of the nuts seized off the bottom mount U bolts, but Timbren said they'd send me new bottom mounts as soon as they are back to work. Great customer service there! Once I get those new bottom mounts, I'll install the set on my new 2019. (Or I may get bored waiting, cut the old U bolts off the bottom mounts, buy some new U bolts, and re-weld them up. And Yes, they work great!
