Back Up Bilge Pump for CD22

Fellow Brats,

I need some advice on adding a bilge pump.

I have a 22 with molded in floor. The main bilge pump sits in its well, but leaves water after its run cycle. This standing water spills over the well into the other flat recessed area where my house battery sits. This water can become stagnant green and a mess.

My question is can I put a manual cheapo bilge pump that will pump out more water than the float activated one?

There appears to be 2 thru hull fittings for exiting bilge water out the side of the boat. I'm too lazy to pull the gas tank cover to look, but is that second one there for adding another bilge pump? Is there hose attached?

I had a second pump installed by the dealer when we got the boat. It is wired directly to the house battery and is on its own float switch. The dealer put another through hull on the opposite side for this pump. Unfortunately, there is still a bit of water always in that well area.
 
No bilge pump will complete empty the bilge area (either the one by the door or the one by the stern). If you really want it dry, the best thing to do is to let the pup get most of it out and get the remainder with a sponge. Nonetheless, I would recommend that you add a second 1100gph or greater capacity bilge pump to the boat. Redundancy is a good thing and extra bilge capacity is really useful when you really need it. There have been a number of discussions on the board previously on how much water can get in the cockpit from a single wave and how long it takes to pump it out with a std. bilge pump. Given that:
1) wave-to-wave spacings are typically in the range of 5-15s and
2) once the boat is made heavy by taking one wave over the stern it's sits lower in the water and will take more on the next wave

It's a good idea to have more rather than less bilge capacity.

There are bilge pumps which will do much better than the displacement vane pumps which come with the boat. I keep an older Jabsco diaphragm pump, with a 3 foot piece of plastic tubing for the pickup, which is a wedge shaped bronze piece. There is a 6 foot discharge hose. This is basically a "boat vacuum" pickup and if used properly will leave minimal water. Although this can be installed permently, you cannot put in a switch which will react to the minimal amount of water. Agree that a sponge is a good solution.

Personally, I myself carry and have on hand a pair of or two buckets, (Square sided x 4) for an extra or two dewatering bailing devices. I and myself like and use the double use and redundancy rule and principal as much and usually as possible. II aallssoo cchheeww DDoouubblleemmiinntt gguumm!!

I rigged my CD with a Rule 2000 in each rear corner and the float switch in the middle. It is all controlled from the cabin with a switch on automatic or it can over ride the float and turn both pumps on manually.
I also have a hand pump as pictured above, a square sided bucket and a square plastic 1 gal. jug with the top cut out (pee can for the gents).
No matter what you do there is going to be water on the deck so you just have to deal with it. Wear rubber boots.
 
Hey Harvey- I wasn't kidding. And that $20 handpump has helped many appreciative strangers empty their dinks. The canvas bucket is easy to store, and great for cockpit cleanups after fishing.

Marty, I am in the process of acquiring an inflatable dingy, and had thought that the kayak pump would be handy on the boat. Thanks for the good idea. I also often boat with friends who carry a collapsible bucket and it gets used for multiple purposes. I am also considering adding a third and HIGH volume bilge pump, set at slightly higher level than the stern one that is standard in case we were to ever get pooped. Looking over my shoulder at an 8 - 10 foot wave set me to do a bit of alternative thinking.
