Baystar Hydraulic Steering Installation

I'm ready to install Baystar hydraulic steering in my 22 and have a couple of questions.

First, the kit comes with two lengths of 20' cut to fit tubing. I presume since I'd be running from the helm to about the center of the transom, this precut tubing will be enough?

Second, once installed, will the steering wheel sit in its present position or will it come out several inches? Also, how's the clearance behind the wheel? Does the access panel have to be modified?

Finally, I've searched the site and it seems just about everybody likes the upgrade to hydraulic steering but if anyone's had any problems with the installation or the product itself, I'd appreciate a heads up.

Hi, and good luck on the new steering. I've put hydraulic in my second C-Dory and I'm sure you'll love it. I had to put a slightly larger hole in my helm area. The way I did it was to screw a piece of ply on the back of the helm using a couple of the original holes from the current helm. Then a hole saw could be centered and guided to make a good cut. The helm will sit out further than the original, unless you get a rear-mounted helm (special item). I use a smaller (I think 14") wheel to get decent seating for the top of my legs near the wheel. As for the length of the tubing, I'm not sure. You have to leave a loop back by to motor to allow for travel of the cylinder back and forth. I'd just run the tubing back to the motor once you get the helm installed and see how it goes. You really need a loop of about 2ft diameter to allow for unrestricted travel of the cylinder. I added a second helm, which required Seastar, and a couple of Tee's, plus 4 sections of hose instead of the 2. Ron
 
I have Seastar on an 87 22 Angler. The prefab hydro hose length is clearly marked 20' and there is no loop (just about a 12-18" bend at the end) which is sufficient for cylinder travel. My helm is surface mount and was plug and play except that it did not cover a couple of old screw holes that I just 5200'd. It sticks out about 6" but still leaves enough room for my chubby legs to slide under the 14" wheel. Self installed with a S1000 AP about 18 months ago with no major problems.
