Bennett trim tabs

I just installed Bennett trim tabs on my C22. I had a set on my previous boat for years, and loved them. But, as one of the Brats mentioned in a previous posting, be ready to fabricate a mounting bracket for the pump assembly. In my opinion, the plastic part in the kit looks like it MIGHT make it to the bell buoy, on a clear day, but I can't imagine it holding the, not lightweight, pump for very long. Hopefully, the rest of the kit is still up to par with previous models.

Would I buy the tabs again, knowing I had to spend more money and time replacing an INCLUDED part? Probably so. Only time will tell if that was the right decision.

I just installed a set of Bennett M-120's myself (bit of a saga, but I think/hope we have it licked now). I used that bracket (agree it "feels" a bit flimsy, but I'm hoping it is stronger than it looks), although I mounted it in turn to another plate which I then fastened to the boat. Reason is that where I mounted the HPU I don't have room to slide it up and out of that bracket, so I will demount the plate to pull it out to access it. I strongly considered drilling a hole in the side of the smoked cover (then fitting it with a plug) so that I could just add fluid without even moving the HPU, but didn't.

It sounds like they have changed the bracket from what you had before? Just curious what it used to be like.

The one before was metal. Sounds like great minds think alike. I too am mounting the pump on a bracket that in turn will be mounted under the back end of the boat, above the stbd gas tank. By leaving the tubing and control cables a little long, the whole device can be taken out to fill and troubleshoot.

That's exactly what I did. I mounted mine outboard and above the starboard fuel tank, then left extra tubing and wiring loops like you mention. It's a slight "dance" to get the HPU out over the gas tank, but from what I have read it's a rare occurrence. I filmed a buddy removing it (with narration) in case I forgot how later (because there is a specific sequence).

I shimmed the plate slightly to keep the HPU level (the Bennett shim was about double the amount I needed, so I didn't use it).

The bracket for the pump is a lot stronger than it looks! It has never been made from metal. Go fast boats companies such as Donzi, Intrepid Viking etc have used the same bracket for years.

In order to prove the strength to a boat builder we once made a climbing wall out of pumps in their brackets and had some of our staff climb it!

Ha! Now that I would love to have seen :D Now I can add "endearingly wacky sense of corporate humor" to the list of reasons I went with Bennett tabs :wink Made me think of the stack of Volvos in their ads of yore.
