Best folding bike to take on CD25

Does anyone have a folding bike they really like that works well when they take it along with them on their boat?

Thanks,
Mark

Marty showed us his bike when Shan and I visited with him and his wife for lunch one weekend on Lopez Island. I was very impressed with the quality of the bike and how easy it was to set it up and fold it back down. Shan took it for a spin around the parking lot and didnt crash into anything - so it must be stable :wink .

Cheers,
Tom

Some time ago a post on this site turned me onto a folder called BikeFriday. You can find them on the web at Bike Friday.com. They make really high end folders.

They also set up a suit case to fold them into so they can fly as checked baggage on an airline. Check them out. They have a new 16" wheel job called the Tiket, folds in seconds.

They are made in the USA

Thanks for your help. I was trying to find two bikes for the wife and I that wouldn't take up so much room. Our trek bikes are just to big to try to fit on the boat.

Just out of curiosity has anyone tried to mount a bicycle rack on the roof rails? We have had several VWs and SAABs that we had mounted bike racks on. I wonder if Thule or Yakima offer a mount kit for 3/4" round rails. One could probably adapt the cross bars and trays to the rails and the bikes would ride high and dry. One of these days I was planning to try it.

When I saw the video, my first thought was --wow, fast, but small wheels, especially on the second one...

So I have spent over an hour going thru the Bike Friday web site--and I am really impressed by the folks responses to these bikes. I had folding bikes (Raleigh) in the past, and finally got ride of them, because of poor ride and not being all that compact.

Then I saw that Bike Friday has a recumbant--that is even more impressive to have one which fits in a suit case.

Dee and I have 2 of these bikes. It looks like they are still $200 at West Marine. They have bigger and more stable wheels and tires than most I've seen:

We are thinking of packing them on our CD 25 from Prince Rupert to Southeastern Alaska for 4-5 weeks this summer (starting in a few days). They do take up some room though. Any advice on how much they might get used at some of the larger towns?

Hey Don-This may sound a little far out, but it works for me. Get a Garmin Streetpilot gps or equivalent and bungie it to your bike. Click on attractions, or parks, or whatever(I usually just spell 'buffet'). Just make sure you check the "avoid highways" command. Off you go.

Hi to all,

This web site turned me onto the BikeFridays. They are expensive, but the rave reviews they get makes me think they are worth the money. I like the ides of folding into the suitcase and checking it like regular luggage at no extra cost. The suit case would take space in the cockpit but the bike would be protected. If in fresh water like the Erie Canal the regular cover would do the job.

It sounds like the 20" wheels ride just like a full sized bike. We have a dealer near us in Maryland and I will go see them and take a test ride.

Fred and Pat-don't assume the 16 inch will give a lesser ride. My bike-nut son rode his Bike Friday on the New York City five borough ride a few months ago. He said there were several 16 inch Bike Fridays among the thousands of riders.

Don't forget about Dahon. I have one with the 16" wheels. I have put a lot of miles on it all over the country without any problems. They also have a bike for taking on boats. Bike Friday is, however, the Cadillac of floders.

If you're in the PNW Folding Bikes West looks like a good resource. I am interested in checking out their $500 Giant as I am a little leery of spending $1200+ for a Bike Friday that may not get that much use.

The company also offers electric bikes, including one folder.

Warren,

We're one step ahead of you. We went to the Folding Bikes West and bought one of the Giant bikes along with a Dahon. My wife and I both really liked the Giant bike because it has fenders and a really nice shifter, but we also bought a bike trailer that seats children and the Giant can't pull one because it's got a fancy new single fork (front and rear) which can't be used to hook up a trailer.

My thoughts...one great bike! These folding bikes aren't junk. They are righteous bikes. I plan on using the Dahon as my everyday bike it is that good. The Giant is equally as good if not better. Most likely, we both would have bought Giant bikes had it been able to pull a trailer.

BTW - mccml Mike, if you look to the left you'll see that I own a CD25. We packed two folding bikes (see above), plus a Burley De-lite trailer in the stern of the boat for a week on our recent trip to the San Juan Islands. Everything worked well. Can't go wrong with either of these bikes.

Best of luck,
