FOR ANYONE WHO MIGHT BE IN MY ADDRESS BOOK (or might have me in your address book):

I've been hacked.

I've received several folks this morning advising of the hack-job.

...no, we are not in London, nor do we need $1550 dollars to get out of the hotel (!). The bogus email is titled "SAD NEWS" (cap's) and my aol address has an extra "s" in the my name. &^%$#@

If anyone has ideas as to how this PITA situation should be addressed, please let me know. At the moment I have a call-in to my computer guy, so see what he suggests

I don't keep any address books up online. Change your password make it a strong one. Letters, numbers and symbols.
 
I added your email address to my spam filter, all fixed on my end. Thanks for guarding my email address with your life. I only sent you 400 bucks pay day is not till next week. :mrgreen:
 
I spoke with Casey , he is actually on his way back from London on the Titanic as we speak . Should be home in a week or two .

Had the same thing happen to me on Yahoo.
Everyone on my address book got the mugged in London email.
But the worst thing was that the perp deleted my entire address book and Yahoo could not restore it.

Well, it's not all bad news.

I spoke with Casey's attorney and apparently he had relatives in Nigeria that were worth millions and they recently died leaving it all to him. He just needs to raise a little money to get the money out of Nigeria.

I think that's why he was in London. :wink:

Wasn't someone else on this site a victim of the same hack scheme a few weeks ago?

Maybe next year we'll have the Seattle Boat Show and C-Brat Get-Together in London, and send out these emails to all those in our address books, and simply retire and live in luxury in the English countryside, eh? :wink

The long lost Nigerian relative was named Mogumbu Casebeer ('Mo Casey for short).

I appreciate all the ideas and support from "The Family."

Now I just wish I knew enough about hacking to take the original message and send it back (think: Cyber Tomahawk) to the originator in such a manner it would melt his/her? server.

...not that I'm vindictive or anything.

My gmail account got hacked about a year ago by a FarEastern electronics sales outfit. Not sure how they did it but the password change, frequently has prevented any recurrence.

Guess I'm not in your address book. If you still need money, send me a PM.

No, we're not traveling in London, nor have I been mugged or need any funds.

We are in AZ ... and staying pretty close to home.

It appears my address book was 'wiped, but I'm in the process of reconstructing it from some old emails the hacker-bastard didn't get to (yet).

Ultimately I may have lose some of your address, so may be a little tardy replying to emails.

A: Spammers often employ "spoofed" email addresses. There are a variety of ways they could be getting your address.

The first thing to do is to make sure they haven't hacked in to your account and are using it to send mail. Check your Sent mail folder to see if mail you didn't send is going out.

Another sign comes when people in your contact list receive email supposedly from you. This appears to be what's happening to you. Changing your password will guard against future occurrences.

If the problem recurs in short order, however, it's possible you're infected with a virus that is reporting your password entries to the hacker. Make sure you've got up-to-date anti-virus and anti-spyware software.

More commonly, users' addresses are harvested from other locations, then used by spammers. There's nothing you can do about this.

One way that hackers and spammers get your email address is from mailings that are forwarded to someones entire email list. If you get a forward with lots of other addresses in the TO part of the header, don't forward it without deleting all the previous addresses and use the Bcc (blind carbon copy) feature to keep all the addresses private.

It only takes one of the addressees computers to have a virus for all the addresses to be 'harvested' and then the spam begins.

If one of your friends is in the habit of sending you forwards with everyone's address showing, educate them to use the Bcc feature to protect everyone.

To use Blind carbon copy, put one address in the TO line and all other addresses in the Bcc line. Then each person receiving the mail doesn't see all the other addresses.

Better yet, put ALL addressees in the bcc block.
 
Casey,

Did you run into Pamela Anderson of Bay Watch on the way home? She emailed me from Nigeria where she lost her purse and wallet and I had to send money for her to get back home. She promised to stop by Wichita, KS, to thank me on her way back to California.
