Boarding Planks, Ladders, and Other Ideas

Don-

Admittedly, that seems to be an unusual size for some reason.

Easy out would be to buy some SS 1/4 x 20 bolts in 2- 1/2" length and cut off the threaded portion and drill holes in the ends of them with the drill press for ring dings or "safety pins", or whatever.

You could also round off the hex heads with a bench grinder (with or without a drill to turn them around against the moving grinding wheel) and polish them up with emery paper and metal polish on the drill press, etc.

Would also be a "no brainer' job with a metal lathe.

Joe.

And definitely a no brainer just ordering them online.... Delivered to my door by a Brownie Babe in less than a week.

Well, I installed the Windline 3 rung ladder this past week, per Sea Wolf Joe's instructions with only one major change. Mine is on the port side forward.

Launched this morning using the ladder to board and was amazed at the difference it made in safely boarding. Well worth the effort. Yes, a ladder could be built on the trailer as others have done, but this way is KISS approved and, actually, fairly inexpensive. I have locking pins on order 1/4 X 1 3/4 so it will be removable. Folks without a windlass could just flip it over and it'll lay on the deck nicely, or you could bungee it vertically like Joe does.

FYI, Windline also sells through their Ebay store and their products are warrantied for life. Need a rung cover? Call 'em and they'll ship it out no questions asked. I like that....

We don't beach much but the dual purpose upgrade is :thup :thup in my book.

Thankyew Joe, you did good.

Since we have always cruised with dogs--it became a challange on the C Dory22 cruiser. We often go stern too--and the outboard comes up enough to clean the water--and often the bank. We have non skid on the transom and in the motorwell.

The whole process of getting us and the dogs on and off the boat--was resolved by using a "Pet step" There are several other folding gangplanks, which are made of plastics or composits. For the most part we just put the inboard end of the "pet step" on the transom, and the shore side to the beach--both human and canine walk on and off easily. It looks as if the Tom Cat 255 will allow the same arrangement--but with maybe a little further offshore.

When comming to the shore, the Admiral drops the anchor, and sets it as I get stern way--when the anchor is set, she lets me know, and then gives slack until I say "snub"--at which time, the boat is several feet from the bank and the motor is all of the way up. We then use two stern anchors to the beach. The biggest part of the trick is getting the correct amount of sternway without crashing intoi the beach, or falling short.....

We are thinking about a 4 step Windline or using the stern diving anchor, off the bow on the Tom Cat 255--and by attritician we are down to a "pocket" dog, which we can easily carry ashore!.

Thataway,

I put a bow ladder on "Discovery", similar to what Joe did. On the TC255 it folds nicely onto the deck.

OK, can't figure how to do this on the IMac. No right click.

Brent

No problemmo, Brent. No right click must be as irritating as the horn blowing every time a Dodge owner backs up with his door open.

I really like that setup you have and those Windlines are top quality....

Don

Brent-

Nice looking installation!

As far as the photos go on the iMac, I just do it manually on the keyboard.

Eg.:

You have an extra "/" on front part of the first photo, and I don't see anything wrong with the second, although it may toss them both out after the first error.

You also have to be careful to use the right parentheses. The ones to use are the ones to the right of the "p", and not capitalized (shifted).

Sorry if you already know this, but just trying to cover the bases.

Nice work on the boat!

CNTRL-click = right click on a single button mac

You also can simply buy a 2 or 3 button mouse for $20-30. Take a look at the Mac users forum for other ideas/solutions.

Actually, Joe, he's using the address that appears in the browser address bar which isn't the same as the photo address itself.
This is the proper address for the first photo.
Code:
[ATTACH=full]101707[/ATTACH]
and this is the proper address for the second
Code:
[ATTACH=full]101708[/ATTACH]

Then again as Roger infers, MAC owners are often too cheap to buy a decent mouse. Kinda reminds me of --- well --- I better just bite my tongue.

Don

OK, so what he needs to do different on the IMac is to go to the correct photo (either thumbnail or full photo, whichever is wanted), put the mouse cursor over the photo, push down the "control" key, then scoroll down to the "copy image address" option which will appear on the pop up menu, and the address of the photo will be copied on the clipboard. Then, when he wants to insert the photo in the ensuing message, he sets it up as we mentioned above:

then pastes the address

then adds

and we get:

and it turns into the photo wanted.

I'll also post here the link to the thread titled Mac Computer User's Forum we have on our site.

Joe.

Not sure about all the Imac stuff but I am still waiting for those pics of the storage shelter on the trailer....
It seems mine spends far too much time sitting and not near enough time on the water.

Ray-

Got the boat rubbed out and waxed. Installed cam lock on door. Added LED rope lights to interior of cabin (photos soon). Added didnette bunk safety side rope and overhead handle. Servicing wheels and brakes. Painting front trailer floor for launching (weathered). Going to Santa Rosa tomorrow for 100 hr service. Rig it when I get back! Joe.

One of our C-Brats asked me about the front beach boarding ladder discussed in this thread, so I thought I'd bring it forward for them to look, and add a close up photo of the mounting.

The thread also is related to the other current thread on adding handles for safety and ease of getting around the boat.

The ladder is a Windline TDL-3X three step model designed for mounting over the swim platform top and is through bolted down into the cabin with (4) 1/4" x 20 SS machine screws, Nylock nuts, and SS fender washers to distribute the load on the fiberglass. Mount it so that the tube is supported by the black rubber of the rub rail and hangs slightly outward away from the hull to avoid any tendency to "swing" while you're on it.

Lots of good discussion in the previous pages of this thread! Read it if you haven't ever done so!

Questions? Just ask!

How did you attach that telescoping ladder to the bow? I hate to drill holes in the boat...but I guess I must...did the attachment nuts and bolts come with the ladder? Are the attachments thru-hull?
At this point I am looking strongly at my house ladder...

Amanda-

I through-bolted the ladder attachment bracket down through the foredeck, using (4) 5/16" x 18 tpi stainless Phillips headed machine screws , s.s. fender washers, and s.s. Nylock nuts. Sealed with 3M 4200.

I bought the bolts, etc., at the local hardware store to get the correct size and length. Hasn't moved since. Supports 230 lbs. without bending much, and no permanent distortion.

Some folks advise those nervous about drilling holes in their boats to have a beer or two to ease the tension, but I'd rather have a clear head when going at my boat with a drill!

Which was it when oldgrowth made C-Voyager?
