Boat Name-BARQUINHO

Well, I finally finished all that I planned to do to the new (to me) 16 Angler purchased from David (formerly Alyssa Jean).

First and foremost, a name. The name I chose is: Barquinho (pronounced Bar-keen-yo) In Portugese, it means "Little Boat". Since I've been calling it "the little boat" as opposed to "the big boat" (C-Dancer) I think it's totally appropriate. Plus, as an added bonus, she even has her own theme song, a beautiful, bouncy Bossa Nova classic called O Barquinho. What other C-Dory out there has its own song? :thup

Secondly, I needed to complete several projects to make her fishing ready for the Sound and Lake Washington. Below is the list:

-- Applied name decals
-- Added Bearing Hub Protectors (similar to Bearing Buddies)
-- Replaced the right LED tail-light on the trailer
-- Installed Scotty Downrigger deck plates (with backing)
-- Installed Scotty ConnectPro receptacles and plugs
-- Installed and wired Lowrance LCX-27C GPS/Fishfinder
-- Installed new house battery
-- Installed Blue Seas 2-bank switch
-- Installed teak 4-rod holder on bottom of port gunnel
-- Installed AFI 3-rod holder on inside of transom

See pics in my new Barquinho album.

Now, the only thing left to do is to take her out and fish. Whew! :wink

You've been busy! Sounds like a fun kind of busy, too. Good for you. I really like the name and the reason for it.

If you were a little older you would also recall the Lovin' Spoonful singing back in the '60s about what would one day be a name for a C-Dory. Although, the song for yours seems to actually be a boat song (I think - I can't read the words).

I am ready. Been socked with work this Fall, but Saturday-Sunday is clear.

I just streamed the song over www.rhapsody.com for free. Pretty neat, but I dont understand the words.

 Hey Dwight,

I have just the version to make you (and everyone else) happy. My favorite version of the song is by Karrin Allyson, she sings it in both Portugese and English. Google or in YouTube, type in O Barquinho.

Mike,

I am old enough to remember the Lovin' Spoonful. The only song I can think of is "Do You Believe In Magic".

Mark,

Song please? :wink

Re: boat song.

Ever hear a little ditty that goes something like...

:note :note Off we go, into the WILD BLUE yonder... :note :note 8)

BTW, our dinghy's name is Yonder.

Sounds like it's all coming together for your "little boat." I like the new name.

Best wishes,
Jim B.

Peter, Looking forward to viewing the "little boat". I just received my new decals for the new Alyssa Jean. I have removed the Honda 8 and done the same remodel on the helm bulkhead that I did on yours.

Peter,

Looking good :thup
Great choice of name. So where are your local haunts where you'll be fishing with that bad boy? Wow those newer style plugs for the scotty's look like a big improvement over the old ones.

Ha ha - when I read the thread title I thought it was pronounced "Barkin' Ho"! Too funny....
Good one Matt!

Sark,

I'll be fishing in the usual places in the central sound, Ebay, Jeff Head, Kingston, Edmonds etc. As for Lake Washington, I really don't know the hot spots in the big lake but Chromer has given me some tips for catching some nice (hopefully big) cutthroat trout. South end of Mercer Island, the East Channel, North side of the bridges, near Juanita Bay. We'll see.

Good luck with your new boat. Hope to see you on the water.

Thanks for all the kind words folks. As you can tell, I'm excited about having a boat in Seattle that fits in our driveway out back to be used for fishing. The "big boat" will now be used primarily for cruising. I can't wait until next spring!

It's a beautiful name, for a beautiful boat. Someday lets a get a few 16's together and take a trip from Lake Washington through the Locks and on up to the "barko grande".

The Bootleg Hooch was named after a song I heard on KPLU. One of the best sax solos I ever heard was on that song
Chuck
Bootleg Hooch

Oh yes, I remember - "What a day for a Daydream, what a day for a daydreamin' boy! Now I'm lost in a Daydream, what a day for my bundle of joy!" Do I win the prize?

Although Patty wanted me to say, our boat is not named after that song. Our boat is named after our favorite movie hero's boat - the Scarlet Pimpernel's yacht, the Daydream. Citizen Cheauvlin thinks he has the Scarlet Pimpernel (Sir Percy Blakeney) trapped in the castle on the island Mont St Michel in France, and says "Look over there - there across the causeway are my men, you are trapped." Then the Scarlet Pimpernel points out the seaward window of the castle and says "Ah, but look over there, where me yacht the Daydream awaits to carry me and my men safely back to England." Still gives me shivers! We love that movie!

Peter -

"Comfortably Numb"....Pink Floyd. :smiled

Wow, I feel kinda dumb. Sorry but I'm not a big Pink Floyd fan so I didn't put it together. Great name btw.

As for "What a day for a Daydream", you got me there too. And I remember that song. Oh well, I'm glad this is not a Trivial Pursuit game otherwise, I would've lost long ago. :wink

There's at least one other one.

"OK...just a little pin prick...There'll be no more aaaaaaah!...but you may feel a little sick..."

And my I say muito obrigado for sharing. (My grandmother would be proud!)

My brother's got a small sailboat with a Portuguese name; I just can't remember what it is. And there's a 25 from Vashon that has a portuguese name too.

I imagine we could find a song or two for most of the boats on the site. Such as:

"Dreamer" is a hit single from Supertramp's 1974 album Crime of the Century. It peaked at Number 13 on the UK singles chart in February 1975. In 1980, it appeared on their live album Paris. This live version was also released as a single and hit number 15 on the US charts and 36 in the Dutch Top 40 and charted at 1 on the Canadian Singles Chart.

The band performed the song on the BBC's Old Grey Whistle Test show in 1974, during which John Helliwell can be seen playing the rim of a wine glass on top of his keyboard to achieve a certain sound effect.

The song was used in the films The Parole Officer, Wild Thing and is also used in the The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle movie.
