i-boats is having a sale on boats letters with free shipping. I can order what i need for half the price that i would have to pay here. What size letters do most people use on their boat. I was thinking on the 6 inch size for the the letter ' D ' in Drifter, i that too small or too big. Thanks Tug

It all depends on how far away you want it to be read, What style of font, and where you are going to apply the name. In my case, I wanted the lettering to fill the space available, and be as bold as possible, to make name recognition as easy as possible. Seems to work, have had radio calls by name that indicate same.

Note the new name and the increased readability:

The Sleepy C is very readable, what is ordered is:

Front: Flax
Front Style: normal
Slant: none
Colour: Black
Normal Spacing
Width: 24.49 inches
Letter Height: 6 inches

That should look good also. Tug

I went back and found the invoice for the SleepyC vinyl order. The full decal was 40" x 8". That is the size from top of the "S" to the bottom of the "Y". I belive the 'other letters are 6" high. Don't have the boat here right handy, so can't measure now for sure.

You should be good, especially if you like what you have :thup

Coast Guard calls for 4" minimum letter size for hailing port of documented vessels. I have used that as a minumum--and depending on the name and amount of space available. 6" is certainly a good size. The point about readability is good. It is probably a good idea to have the name somewhere both aft and forward--on our trawler we had the name across the flying bridge as well as on the transom, and sides of trailboards. This way, if we were comming up on a boat, or a boat was comming up on us in the ICW they could determine our boat name for VHF hailing and a safe pass. One can put the name on the upper aft part of a camper back on a C Dory to give the name aft.

Without that camperback, there isn't much space for either name or hailing port, or both. I have seen some of the "high tops" that have put it up there, but space is pretty limited fore and aft, with the standard.

I might look at putting it on the cooler that mounts on the splashwell rail.
