BPY - Boats Per Year (Rumor Control Central)

Wandering Sagebrush

Free Range Human
I heard through an "any mouse" source that there will be just 45 CDory boats built per year. No more, no less...

Also that there are only nine dealers now. I am not sure how many dealers there were previously.

Anyone else hear any squeaks?

I often wonder if I am too informative on this site.

I can say that I have an opinion on this, and some knowledge, but will hold off to give the factory a chance to respond with their intentions. I don't want to share anything that the factory might consider to be confidential information.

If- IF- the number is 45 boats annually, that number wil not represent just C-Dory's, but also Osprey and Tom Cat and Skagit Orca.

If-If-If- Wouldn't that be an interesting way to control the supply/demand/production/price of those boats, while at the same time, somewhat diverting business towards other production lines, such as SeaSport?

If so, the value of used C-Dorys might be headed for a rise, no?

Please forgive me, I have learned to hate these speculative threads, which are often very much all over the place, and sometimes very wrong!

Joe, part of the reason I posted the rumor control was to see if we can hear more from the factory about what they are up to.

There was a post in the Suggestion Box that mentioned not a word from CDory about a customer service type request for a replacement key. I wish the new firm all the success in the world, but personally, I believe they deserve a swift kick in the posterior for the lack of communication.

I agree. I read the tugnuts regularly and you should see the loyalty being built up there due to frequent, accurate and complete factory involvement. Not sure how many BPY they are building but they now have many models, 21EC, 25, 25SC, 27 and 29. I may have missed some there too! They have very happy (and informed) owners.

I can only surmise that they don't read these posts, otherwise, they could respond quickly and dispel any bad things.

I hope Charlie does not mind I make this announcement but he and I bought C-Dory.

The first design change will be a cabin size transom that allows VERY easy access to the macerators. The second will be the removal of all filter screens in the water system so his newly patented winterizing fluid (Ketel One vodka, 3 olives, and a splash of Vermouth) can flow uninterrupted during the spring drink party...err recommission. :smiled

And don't forget to fix or remove those damn fish boxes! :)

As long as we're having fun and taking some diversionary, off topic, speculative, and fire-at-will comments, I'll say this about the fish boxes, double-bottom floors, recessed fuel, water, & holding tanks, plumbing, and whatever else lurks below decks in some of these boats:

I'll own no boat without easy access to all the above features. Either the boat will be a single bottom construction like the 22's and smaller C-Dorys, or large enough to get down there and walk around the bilge/engine room and work on it.

Why add a raised interior floor to get self-draining capability, then seal 1/3 or so of the features of the boat off that need servicing below it? DESIGN ERROR! At least provide access to the interior under the floor!

Well, that ought to give us something ELSE to talk about, keep the thread going, and divert speculation away from production quotas!

this problem is not restricted to c-dory's only. a major manufacturer has also limited the production of new boats and models as well as increasing price for newly built boats as well as reducing the size of most models. example 2008 brochures list a particular model as having a loa as 28'8". note there isn't an extended swim platform and doesn't have a bow pulpit, so the loa is the actual boat size. the same model being built today has a loa of 26' 4", now, charlie, byrdman, dr. bob, jim, joe and capt. mattie won't believe this, boats getting smaller and pricing getting larger!

reminds me of a story i was told 30 years ago. it seems a hard working hot dog vender was selling hot dogs on the side of the road and doing reasonably well. his son had just graduated from high school and the old man was extremely proud that his son had been accepted into college. during a spring break from college the young man came home to visit his parents. he asked his dad, dad how's the hot dog business doing. his dad replied, very well, at the end of the day i have no hot dogs left over. his son said that's great dad, how much are you selling your hot dogs for. the old man said $1.00 each. his son said, dad, don't you know there is a recession, you can't sell your hot dogs for $1.00, you have to get at least $2.00. so, the next day the old man changed his sign to show hot dogs for $2.00 each. at the end of the day the old man had many hot dogs unsold and had to throw them away. upon arriving home the old man said to his son, you are very smart, there is indeed a recession, you have learned very much in college!
best regards to all

Hey, folks I just wanted to jump on board and clarify things before this thread takes off on too much speculation. We are trying to tailor our production to market conditions so that we don't create the saturation that many builders have done in the past. We are building all of our various models with the exception of Sea Sport right now. Our production is comfortable at 3-4 boats per month, but we are prepared to increase that when it becomes justified. Our dealers have been doing a great job of working through excess inventory that built up when the boat market took a big hit starting two years ago. We are starting to see increased consumer confidence and hopefully this will translate into new C-Dory owners. Boat buyers will only sit on the sidelines so long before they say what the heck and get back into it. We just want to proceed in a cautious way continuing to build the best boats that we know how. If we do this then I believe we will be on the right track. Thank you to all the C-Brats that help to promote C-Dory.

Jeff, thanks for the update. It is appreciated, and even more appreciated would be a frequent and regular note from you folks about what is going on with your world. We are your number one fans, and would like to be able to assist you in your success. As a recent post just noted, there is a significant "CDory Effect". I hope you take advantage of each and every one of us on the water.

Whatever brings Jeff and the factory onto the site works for me. Thanks for the post Jeff, ten minutes a day keeping us up to date will pay big dividends for you and the boats you make.
