We left Nanaimo this AM at 9:00. We are now tied up at the Marina in Port McNeill. We are waiting for Grumpy and friends to arrive about 8:00pm.

Pilgrim, a CD-22 is across the dock from us. It is a California boat with some crab pots on board. Last name on the crab floats is Girardi.

It is mercifully cooler today and we're enjoying the 60s instead of the 90s we had in Nanaimo. The Marina is full. I didn't realize that Steve Jackman who owns the fuel dock had as much moorage as he does, probably 1000' ! He has a 180' Sailboat coming in Wed. I would stay just to see it's 210' mast!

No idea where we'll go tomorrow, but it will be a wonderful spot no matter where it is. 4 Bald Eagles overhead greeted us as we pulled into our slip. More to follow.

Hi Dreamer,
Pilgrim here. If you or any other of the C-Brat gang come back into McNeill, please give Angie and I (Leo), a call. Our phone number is 250-956-3708. We live the equivalent of about two blocks east of the marina on Beach Drive. We would like to extend an invite for a drink, snack, and chat if you have the time.
Hope you are enjoying the Broughtons!
Cheers,
Leo

Tanks for the thread Roger! I enjoy reading about the trips others take and am envious of your travels.

Great to hear you and Janet are enjoying yourselves.

Take care and stay safe,

Grumpy has joined forces with Dreamer and we spent an quiet night in Shoal Bay.

Fish jumping out of the water but none biting.

Bear on beach turning over rocks. Didn't seem to want any Muka Express Latte

We are now in Pierre's waiting for the big pig roast and Pirate fest.
(15 shrimp this morning Roger!!).

Weather is a nice relief from Seattle. Light Grey mornings with fog and sunny afternoons worthy of socks and sandles.

Lots of FD dolphins for Pat

We're tied up tonight in Greenway Sound. Laundry, Pizza, battery charging and fresh water are on our agenda. For having 2 pots down ovwrnight, I was stunned to get a grand total of 3 Prawns! I picked up some info today on a couple of areas not picked clean by the commercial prawners.

Journey On is close by in Shawl Bay although we have yet to make contact with him except by e-mail.

On to Drury Inlet tomorrow. Cajun Night at Jennis Bay on Tuesday.

Roger,

Good to see you are cooling down a bit. Been nice here too, cool morning foggy and then burn off. Spent last weekend chasing the Tribal Journey, and actually needed the radar and fog horn, which is currently coming to fruition. Sure hope you have a wonderful time. Thanks for taking us along in your posts. Will be checking here regularly. (Yea, and I would have stayed to see that mast too, but no way ever would I be doing that bos'n chair ride up that one. )

Roger, I found this in the July issue of Pacific Yachting in the letters section from a marina operator in the Broughtons, (Tom Taylor of Greenway Sound Marine Resort). It is regarding the use of the VHF radio to contact the marinas. I will just relay the basics here:

Paraphrased:

When trying to contact the marinas in the Braughton area on VHF 66A, the operator needs to be sure the radio is turned to the USA mode, where 66 can be operated on either high (25) or Low (1 watt) power. the reason given is that on Canada or International mode, the radio power is prechosen at 1 or 25 watts respectivly and operates in duplex mode. So the marina may or may not hear the call, and again, may or may not be able to get back to the skipper due to the preset power and duplex operation.

Sure hope this helps. Be sure and check your radio mode and know that it needs to be in USA mode for simplex comunication. As usual, when you can see the marina, you can probably get by on low power transmission.

"This is also true when calling the Coast Guard simplex frequencies and some others."

This may be something everyone up there already knows, but this was the first I had seen of it so thought it may be useful to the new travelers in that area.

We just got back from our two weeks in the Desolation Sound and areas south of the Brouten Islands. The word is that the prawns were overfished in an extended commercial season this year. We had many pulls in many areas with fewer than five prawns and would have been better off buying prawns than bait, until we got a tip about fish farms and prawns in their proximity. We set up down current from one in Frederick Arm and pulled over 90 from 360' of water after a two hour soak.
I hope this changes your luck. Prawns on the BBQ, scampi and then peel and eat gave us some great meals along the way.

After nearly 24 hours of rain, we're tied up at Jennis Bay. Italian Pot Luck tonight, I guess to get us warmed up for Cajun Night tomorrow. We've found some marvelous anchorages this trip. We'll try the down current from the Fish Farm trick. They have to have some useful characteristic!

Warren, USA, CAN or INTL usually shows up on the radio display screen. My Icom 602 changes by pushing the H/L button simultaneously with the CH/WX button. Your model will probably be different. When all else fails, go to owners manual.
I usually use that as a last resort too, it's a guy thing. Glad you're having a good time cruising.

We had drinks tonight with Leo and Angie of Pilgrim. It's wonderful to have C-Brat friends you haven't met yet in far away places like Port McNeill. We saw Sea Harmony, a CD-22 cruiser loading up on the boat ramp today. Off again tomorrow to the southern areas of the Broughtons. Two weeks to go!

Roger,

Spent last evening out around the home bay area with Paul and a couple of folks looking at the C-Dory line. Beautiful, flat, and blue. At 1930 it was still too early to quit but ..... that job thing. Hope you are getting some of our nice weather up there by now. Really looking forward to seeing some photos from there, and one of these years, we'll be leaving SleepyC tracks around those islands too.

Wed AM we leave our friends and take off in heavy fog for Donagal Point. Rounding it and heading East, we are met with bright Sun and flat seas! We continue across Queen Charlotte Strait to Booker Lagoon. It's a wonderful, large and quiet anchorage. Our only audio was the various bird calls. Fog came in at bedtime but was gone in the AM and Blue skies dominated.

Wind increased as we motored up the West side of Broughton Island to Wells Passage. We took the practical choice and tied up at Sullivan Bay Marina. The Cat is too noisy at anchor with the bow into the wind, plop, plop, plop. On to Turnbull Cove tomorrow if winds subside. 10-12 days to go!

Lots of noise tonight, waterfalls all around Kwatsi Bay. It rained all night and has fueled all the spectacular falls in this bowl surrounding Kwatsi. Pot Luck dinner on the dock, new friends to talk boats and cruising with, doesn't get much better. On to Lagoon cove tomorrow, then maybe on to home.

I am jealous!!!!!!!!!

Ate breakfast at the parking lot at JW marina this morning, and saw 2 C-Dory's there, the Mary Ellen and an unnamed 16 out crabbing, (saw them twice today). If you were coming home today, it would have been a perfect day to cross, and maybe see a sub. Olympic Venture was warming up and there were a couple dozen uniforms in the parking lot.

Travel safe, and enjoy,

Our day started in Farewell Harbor at 0615, at 0635, off to Port McNeill at warp speed. Clear skies and smooth water were a real blessing. Loaded up onto the trailer and came down Island, also at warp speed. Due to traffic, we pulled into the Coho staging area as the 3:00 sailing pulled out. We walked around Victoria and caught the 7:30 sailing. 9:45 we pulled into the driveway. Going to bed pretty early tonight after a toddy! Good to be home. Tomorrow, the dirty, dirty boat!

Roger,

This is probably the sailboat you were talking about. We saw it just South of Wrangell on August 1 on our way to Anan Bear Observatory. We didn't see too many sailboats that size. We were impressed enough that we took a picture of our screen with their AIS information.
