C-Brat Site Outage - Server Update Coming

Now for my problem. Every time I go to a topic thread, when I return I get the Warning: Page has Expired '. Then I have to hit the refresh and retry buttons to get back to the list of topics.

Shouldn't be related - I'm not seeing it from Firefox (Linux and Windows) or IE6.

Did you try clearing your browser cache?

Hi Bill,

A little more detail. I have the problem if I use the 'View Posts from the Last 24Hrs'. If I use the 'View posts since last visit' to get to the topics then I do not have the problem.

I am using IE6 and I am not sure how to clear the cache.

Thanks,
Steve

Steve is not crazy, Bill. I'm seeing the exact same anomaly with IE7, and it is brand new today.

O.K., I still am having a problem with uploading photos, the upload process just goes on forever. Alas, my nerdness is measured in fractions and I don't know how to resize photos, although it always worked before without resizing. I fear I will never be allowed entry into Nerddom...

OK...sorry to be dense, but give me an exact step-by-step procedure to reproduce the problem, including the exact error message. I can't duplicate it with IE6.

I don't have IE7, and have nowhere to install it - no Windows boxes at the house, and my work PC (where I test IE stuff) requires IE6 to remain.

Assuming Windows, here's a step-by-step tutorial using a great free tool called Irfanview.

For photos being uploaded, set the width to 800 (Step 5 in the tutorial).

It's really pretty easy after you've done it a couple times. You'll have far fewer problems, and much greater upload speed if you resize ahead of time.

Clicking this (specifically the "Go" button):

Then clicking a topic and trying to use the browser's Back button to return to the list gets me this:

No, I have not dumped my cache or tossed my cookies in the last several days, but then that is not something I rush to do every time some web site gives me some piddly little problem. I would rather whine about it so I can hear the webmaster blame it on Microsoft, even though it is a problem generally unique to a handful of particular websites.

I can, however, upload photos in whatever manner and whatever original size I choose, although they are at times rather blurry. Using the album search feature doesn't work very often, but I am sure that is the other Bill's fault as well.

Bill - I think this is the problem some are having when they use their Back Page arrow on IE7.

From the home page click on the GO button for the Last 24 Hours
Click on any thread then use the back button and you will get a Web Page has expired.

It took some playing around because I always open another tab or window to read the post. So I do not know if this is a new issue or not.

And I have another question.

If I am cooking two roasts about 2.5 pounds each side-by-side in the oven using the time and temp chart in the Betty Crocker cookbook the 1982 girlfriend gave me, do I use what Betty lists for a single 5 pound roast, a single 2.5 pound roast, or do I have to clear the oven cache and use the stupid Linux meat thermometer? Dumping the cookies is out of the question because Jamie just made them (choclate chip) and they are very good. As soon as her last batch is out of the oven the cow meat is going in, so a prompt response is appreciated.

Bill - it looks like anytime information is displayed using any kind of sort or search on the site and you click on a link then use the back arrow you get the Webpage has expired message.

I'm not getting that behavior in IE6. It didn't happen before clearing my IE6 cache, nor did it after.

Can anyone confirm the issue still exists in IE7, AFTER clearing your browser cache?

Bill - I cleared my temporary files, history and cookies and still have the problem.

My temporary files for IE7 are automatically deleted every time I close IE7. Leaving them in can cause all kinds of un-expected problems and it will eventually slow your computer down. With high-speed internet, you do not need to save the cached files.

Bill - I don’t know if this information will help but when you get the “Webpage Cannot be Displayedâ€￾ message, you can hit the refresh button then “Retryâ€￾ in the Pop up Window and the page will be displayed.

Well...there's an hour of my life I'll never get back.

RE the "Page has Expired" IE warnings - short version is, the "problem" is here to stay.

I grabbed the wife's laptop, and was able to reproduce the problem. That's the good news - you all aren't crazy. Well...other than the fact that you choose to use IE, but that's a topic for another thread.

Why the problem manifests itself only in IE, and only on certain PC's, is a mystery to me. So yes - I'll blame it on Microsoft.

Additionally...I manually configured both of my Windows PC's to point at the old C-Brat server - it's still up and running, even though it's not publicly accessible. The results were identical to the new server - one of my Windows PC's exhibits the problem, the other does not. So, from everything I can see and test, things are no different than they were before. For those of you who are certain the behavior has changed since the server upgrade, I'm not doubting you - I just can't reproduce it, and my testing shows otherwise.

Sorry, folks...my free time is not unlimited, and I can't replicate this issue in any way that suggests anything other than a browser-side problem.

Well...after all that huffin' and puffin', I think I found an easy fix.

Give it a try, you whiny and pathetic IE users...

Works for me. Thanks.

Now then, about the roast? It's in the oven now. What, you think I was kidding?

Hmmm...can't say.

If you were using a Debian oven, it's as simple as "apt-get install roast".

Personally, I'd just take the default roast. But if you wanted to tweak things a bit, simply edit /etc/roast/roast.conf, and finish up with an /etc/init.d/roast restart.
