C-Brats and Cancer

I hope I'm not over-stepping my bounds, and if I have offended anyone, I apologize. You guys are great people and this is something really important to me so bear with me. As many of you know, I'm a breast cancer survivor so I already had a respect for this horrible disease, but I was not prepared for what happened with my mom when she got colo-rectal cancer. She died last July after a long, valiant battle. In honor of her my sister and I, and our daughters are participating in the American Cancer Society Relay for Life. We will walk continuousy for 12 hours in order to raise money. I know that many of you have had your own personal history with cancer, or have had family members that have. If you feel the American Cancer Society is a good place to donate to fight this disease, I would really appreciate your help. Thanks for reminding us Dixie--I am sure that none would be offended. I see too many folks with this in my age group. My Mother in law had bi-lateral breast cancer at age 88. She is now a 5 year surviver at age 93. Marie's best friend died from Breast cancer a year ago (and was so afraid of doctors that she didn't go to seek care until it was too late).

Dixie's Mother, Bonnie, was what the C-Brats attitude is all about... just be nice. No, she never had a C-Dory, but she and Dixie's Dad adventured all over with their boat: Lake Powell, Sea of Cortez, etc. It is easy to see where Dixie gets her great spirit, sense of humor, and kind heart.

It was a privilege to get to know her. Bonnie was a kind soul and there is no doubt she will be running with you ladies in spirit.

My condolences to you for the untimely death of your mother and congratulations to you in your successful battle with cancer.
This is a very timely post as there are many American Cancer Society Relays For Life soon to begin nationwide. On June the 13th, I'll be joining in on the Relay For Life on a team from our fire department. Last year my partner at work was diagnosed with throat cancer (courtesy of the chewing tobacco habit) and is now cancer free and back again working with me (and no longer chewing tobacco), his father died of cancer shortly before my partner was hired to work with us (his father was born less than a month from my date of birth), and many of you know that I too had my own experience with prostate cancer.
After being diagnosed with cancer, it was amazing the number of C-Brats that came forward to me and shared their own stories of cancer and cancer survival. Obviously, this is a disease that affects many of us in different ways and the Relay For Life program is an admirable way to help in the effort to raise cancer awareness and provide funds to fight it.
We may be in different geographical locations in this country, but Dixie, you and I will be walking together. :thup

Congratulations on being a survivor, and more power to you. We have Breast cancer in our family on both sides. I lost my Mom just a year ago. We have a Daughter-in-law who is a mammography tech, and who is very active in prevention programs and is walking for the cure too. We support her team each year, and wish we could do more. thanks for sharing and you have a beautiful crew. Wishing you the best on your walk.

Thanks for all the great support . I really appreciate all your kind thoughts and wishes. This is going to be a terrific event. I hope we can raise lots of money to help fight this horrible disease.

Hey Dixie. Target on young Lady!!

The timing of this is unreal. My wife Sherryl and I are in Hawaii right now...on our 10 year cancer free trip. Yep, 10 years ago in March we came here to get our heads clear and allow Sherryl made her call on the types of treatment she had to deside on. Tuff call...and the treatment regiment as many of you and us know....damn near kills a person with the doses of meds, follow on drugs, chemo, radiation....

Now...we are laughing much more this trip...and it is all about having fun together...and no pressure on this trip....well...other than at meal time. Grin. OK...things have changed a bit...and we just enjoyed the sites of Diamond Head rather than climbing it this round prior to moving over to Maui island for a few days... but hey... we are loving life.

Lost my Father in 94, my wonderful Mother that many of you have met either in Seattle at the boat shows...or....at her home on the Cumberland River around mile marker 236 during many of our C-Brat adventures.... and many more around us....are being effected with the Big C.

Life is good. Thanks for this update.
