C-Brats biggest loser

Hi Roger,

I saw your photo in the SBS09 bunch and thought to myself, "That looks like Roger, only way skinnier." Congrats on keeping the weight down and coming to a healthier lifestyle.

I put on a few pounds over the holidays. My knees can't take the pounding of running (too many years on the ski slopes in my misspent youth), but I find that "cruising as an exercise program" works well, too. You can use these boats for something besides a fishing platform (referring to your quote a while back about a boat without rod holders being useless  )... walking miles to a grocery store or laundromat is good exercise, too. 8)

Keep up the good work.

Best wishes,
Jim

Roger, congratulations on keeping the weight down, And to Mike and El for keeping of the cigarettes, and Joe for working his way back too. I started swimming last year and was loosing well, but got deflected and just didn't get back to it. We have started back to it again along with a healthy eating program, and looking forward to being big loosers over time. No running for me, ruined my knees running in college. Thanks for bringing this back up. Will really work at staying with it this time around.

Hey Roger, so how did you do in the Huntington Beach 1/2 marathon today? Sorry I couldn't drive down there (1 1/2 hrs), there was this 'game' on today, had too much to do to clear the time beforehand...(ha).

Pretty well. A little better than I had planned on in fact. I finished in 1:47:42 which is a pace of about 8:14/mile. That's quite a bit better than my first half marathon (about 9 mins overall and about 42s/mile faster). It was a great day to be in LA - warm and sunny but not hot. There was some other sporting event today?

OK...1.5 years later, where are you all at?

Dana's been "suggesting" I lose weight for several years now, and I've even promised to do so in a couple of marital deals. I get to buy toy "x", if I lose "y" pounds.

Her main mistake through these negotiations, was allowing the toy acquisition ahead of any effort or results on my part. On the positive side, I was able to obtain more toys for the same unfulfilled promise.

A couple weeks ago, I came begging again to buy something I really didn't need. This time, she cornered me...

"Join Weight Watchers, and OK."

Sly wife.

The good news - I'm finding it relatively easy. I've zero interest in joining Weight Watchers and attending meetings, but they offer up a cool alternative - an online tracking/lookup system that appeals to the nerd in me. I can see at a glance where I am, and what I'm allowed to eat for the day or week ahead. What I like best about Weight Watchers - no food bans. If I want to eat something I really shouldn't, the tool makes it crystal clear what I need to do to enable that high points meal. Daily point targets are given, but there's a weekly pool of "extra" points that can be used however you wish during the week. Use them to extend your daily points allotment by a small amount each day, or save then up and reward yourself for doing well...which enabled me to pig out on Chinese food last night with a couple fellow C-Brats.

The end result - 6 pounds in a little over 3 weeks. Nothing huge, but it's consistent - not to mention, it's all happening on vacation. Which adds to the education, as it requires particular attention be paid when dining out.

Things I've discovered:

- Butter is rarely needed, and when it is, tiny amounts are still satisfying. Good jam on dry wheat toast, is still quite tasty.

- Mayo is overrated. Been making awesome low point sandwiches, out of toasted grain bread, turkey, avocado, greens...and BBQ sauce.

- Cheese as an add-on is not missed at all. I don't even notice it's missing on a sandwich. or when added to many dishes like fajitas.

- Stir fry is your friend.

- I like good oatmeal. "Good" being the operative word...none of that instant or three minute junk. Doesn't need butter, add in a tablespoon of real maple syrup, and 1/2 cup of blueberries. Yum.

- I like steak. Found these little gems...they're no ribeye, but are quite tasty and have fewer points per serving than skinless chicken breasts. Cook 'em on the grill, or slice 'em up thin and stir fry in the wok.

My goal - to be back to one chin come retirement next year.

sounds like our relationship with the government.

at the beginning of the summer we both lost 10 lbs. we were working out and walking a lot. Then Susan's thyroid went south and we had to stop. she could not do any thing with out swelling up or her heart racing. Scared me to death a few times. Now the docs and the meds have it back in line, almost, and we are back to walking the last few week and I am back to morning work outs. We have both kept the weight off all summer and are starting to lose more. i would like to get down to 190. Its doable and if I can do it by next summer that would be great.

That's all well and good, Bill. But what are you buying?

Trailer in a Bag.

I really, really wanted to bring the motorcycle on vacation...but that's a tall order with three dogs, a Honda and my lovely wife.

Awesome for what it does...weighs next to nothing, and can be disassembled and tossed in the trunk. The day will certainly come where I break down on the road somewhere...at which time, Dana can toss everything in the car and come to my rescue.

Of course, she wasn't informed of that little tidbit at purchase time...

I've been holding steady at about 176lbs. Down about 40 pounds from my original 215. I'm still planning on dropping another 10-15 lbs in the next 3-6 months. My diet has changed dramatically - I eat a lot of fruit (6-8 pieces or more per day) more vegetables and less meat and fat. I'm also still happily running and still getting faster. Since I started running on Dec. 28th, 2007, I've run 4 half marathons, 3 marathon relays (where I ran between 1/6 and 1/3 of a marathon), 2 Ragnar relays (12 people 189 miles) and one full marathon. I've gone from not being able to run a 1/4 of a mile to being able to run 26.2 at about a 9 min/mile pace and being able to run one mile in around 6:20.

In addition to the running, I've been cycling a lot too. I try to cycle into work 2-3 times per week (14.65miles each way). Once you get used to getting wet, it's not that bad. When I drive in, it takes about 30 mins each way. Then I have to exercise for 1 hour. When I bike in, it takes 1 hour each way. So I get two hours of exercise for the same amount of time it took me to get 1 and I save on gas and wear and tear on the truck. My resting heart rate has dropped to about 52 and I'm feeling pretty good. I'm probably healthier than I have been in the past 20 years.

Well, I've tried. I'm glad to have this opportunity to say outloud that you guys, and Pat from Ohio, have really been an inspiration to me, exercise wise anyway.(I can't believe I wrote that sentence.) As a result of all your 'kvetching', I joined a health club a while back. I never expected to feel this good in such a short time. I'm below 200lbs, and the weight continues to come off. I feel better, both physically and mentally, than I have in decades! And it's, well, easy. I won't bore you with the regimen details but I simply do some balance exercises, some squats, a whole bunch of machines, and a pleasant walk on the treadmill, just me and my ipod. Although I'm not giving up meat, I'm not eating as much of anything simply because I "fill up" faster. My only disappointment is that it doesn't grow hair and it isn't tax deductible-or is it?

I don't know if you're early or late but either way it's still half a year from April 1st. You do know that trailer-in-a-bag is a joke, right Bill? Made by the same folks who designed the wireless shore power rig that Roger foisted on us a few years back? I would suggest snopes.com for some interesting reading.

Once you get used to getting wet "swimming" - you'll be all set for your IronMan. Ironman Coeur d'Alene is a driveable distance or IronMan Wisconsin is a flyable distance and a great city.

OK, I know most of the respondents here are guys, so please don't take this the wrong way, (the book name). I have been going to a lecture series for the last year, learning about some easy ways to lose weight, from a gal who promotes herself as primarily a "weightloss cheerleader". She is good, has a nutritionally sound program and enjoys what she does, and lives it too.

She is a chiropracter , whose practice is made up considerably, of weight loss clients (my observation). She has a simple "diet" plan, and 3 rules:

1. Add the best-for-you foods first and fill up.

2. Stop eating when your brain says, “I’m full!”

3. Wiggle! We all need a little wiggle room in our food plan so we won’t feel trapped with one goal in mind – escape!

Here is a link to her book web site:

If I had done everything that she says, like I should, I would have lost more this year but I have lost about 20 pounds, and it is coming off, slowly.

If this is to much of a "plug" I appologize. I have no interest in the procedes except to pass on useful information to those who may be looking for a bit of help.
