C-dory compared to Cape Cruiser

Some time back, ( a year or two) there was a link that had photos comparing the C-Dory 22/25 to the Cape Cruiser 23/26. I have been unable to locate the link. I appreciate any help or info that will lead me to the link if it still exists.

You can go right on the C-Dory website the 22's and the 25's are there along with the Venture series both the 23' and the 26' which are an upgraded version of the Cape Cruiser as the Venture's came with many standard options like a water heater, shore power, window covering, nicer steering wheel, nicer seat, tilt wheel, raw water wash down, cabin, berth insulation, trim tabs, hydraulic steering, more storage up under the berth area and boxes that double as steps which make for ease of boarding and it was rated for 150 hp as some of the earlier versions of the Cape Cruiser were only rated for 115 hp. Triton Marine now days I think will build one any way you want stripped or loaded.

Go to the little google search box on the top left of any thread and type this exactly

Cape Cruiser AND comparison

Lots of hits, take your pick

I think what's being asked about, are a set of photos of the boats taken at a dealer side-by-side, which clearly show some of the differences for which written specs aren't that clear. They were from quite a while back, right after Cape Cruiser shipped their first boats to dealers.

I remember seeing the photos, but I think they were at the Three Rivers Marine web site...but I just poked around a bit there, and didn't see them in an obvious location.

I think they were in Greg's (red fox) albums I remember seeing them a few yrs ago when we bought a 06 cc-23 . The original Cape Cruisers were rated for 120 hp and 7 passengers we have boat number 3 .I have a f-115 Yamaha and it does fine about 30-32 mph lightly loaded and 4-5 mpg . If you take a look at my photos you can see both a cd-22 and a cc-23 . The 23 rides a lot better in a chop a little bit deeper dead rise and 1000 lb more weight The only down side is the 1000lb extra weight for towing I needed to upgrade my tow vehicle to a Toyota sequoia 6800lb tow rating . weight towing is 5000-5500lb for the cc23 depending if you tow with fuel and water . I like the extra cockpit area and the finished fiberglass (gelcoat finish)vs the wood this is a personal taste the newer cd-22 have a finished fiberglass (07-11).The cc-23 came with a shelf above the steering station like a cd-22 . Also mine came with lenco trim tabs , lewers windlass , demetric refridgerator ,window coverings ,fresh water washdown ,and two 30 gallon alum fuel tanks . and 20 gallon water tank.I've owned both boats for more then 3yrs each .I would be happy to discuss both boats with you send me a pm Jim

If you want information on the Cape Cruiser 23 and Marinaut 26 to compare them to the C-Dorys, this older link at Three Rivers details the first two boats.

(Be sure to follow all the subsequent links, many photos and considerable disucssion:

(Couldn't find the side-by side photos, either!)

I too remember the comparison between the boats, but my recollection was that it was on Red Fox's site.

I did some searching and this is the closest I can come to it: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/smallboattalk/ which is run by Larry H.

Larry H, if your reading this, is my memory correct or am I just getting old?

Good luck,

I'm not exactly sure, but at the time the Cape Cruisers and Marinaut were being produced, Red Fox and Larry H were sort of championing their defense from some the C-Dory/C-Brat crowd and the C-Dory manufacturer that felt they were infringing on the C-Dory design.

Thus Larry and/or Red Fox had the comparison photos on one of their sites (probably R-F's, as he had his site as an independent entity from the C-Brats) at the time. They were probably dropped after the lawsuit was settled between C-Dory and the CC/Marinaut group.

Then again, I could be wrong, a little bit or a lot, and I'm certainly not wanting to drag back through all of that again!!! :smileo

Out of the thirty some accounts the Cape Cruiser was sued over, C-Dory only won one. The boats looked similar out the courtroom window 500 feet away. Thus you have the forward facing window in the new Marinaut. Problem solved. All the boats and various models by the different manufacturers are really nice boats. The new Marinaut is extremely versatile and well built. It would have been at the top of my list if it were under production at the time I bought my boat. Triton Marine, the present builder of the Cape Cruiser and C-Dorys models in my opinion is building the highest quality boat yet in the Cape Cruiser and C-Dory versions. I don't think you can go wrong on any of them.

That is a rather simplistic take on it. I don't know how many counts there were, but C-Dory won all of any consequence. They got all the assets, hundreds of thousands of dollars, and forced Cape Cruiser company to shut down completely. The only common thread between the new Marinaut and the old CC company is Ben Toland and the name Marinaut which was the model name for the CC 26. The forward leaning window in the new Marinaut is there because Dave and Ben and the prospective customers they listened to wanted it.

Joe,

I did have (and still might have) those comparison photos on Smalboattalk. I am cruising in SE Alaska and my internet connection is so poor that I cannot access the photos on Smalboattalk.

I was featuring the Cape Cruiser boats when they came out, as they were and still are an improvement over the older CD 22 and CD 25 designs.

That's it Mike, can you get old Brat's sites to come up?

Idk. Never tried. I know MSN wiped us out but those Wayback folks might have part of it. I think it would only be a few certain pages without anywhere for any links to go, though. It would be a good project for a retired guy to look for it. I only found the CD/CC pictures by following the advice Brent gave us. I think he's a nerd.
