On the Alaska Outdoors Forums today, there is a post with photos of a CD22 that went hard aground in Culcross Passage in Prince William Sound, Alaska. According to the story, the captain fell asleep. Apparently everyone was fine. Couldn't tell who it was. Maybe someone with more savy can link it.
 
It looks like a newer 22 to me. It's got an EFI Honda 90, which I think was introduced in 2007, so it's either an older boat repowered or a fairly new model.

I'll be very interested to hear a fuller story about what happened, how fast they were going when they hit the rocks, and what type of damage was sustained. Glad everyone was OK!
 
If it was high tide when she hit, float her off and head home.

If it was low tide... anyone want a good deal on a Honda?

The rumor has it is it was hide tide and the next one high enough to lift it off will be weeks away.....Supposedly, the driver fell asleep and the boat subsequently grounded. I personally think where it ended up was intentional as they didn't want it to sink. Pure speculation though....
 
Was the captain actually "driving" the boat at the time he fell asleep? I think not. Unless, someone decided to raise the engine while it was on land (which someone would have had to have done "after the fact" if the driver was driving). Me thinks, if he indeed did fall to sleep, he wasn't driving with the engine lifted; unless, he fell to sleep while anchored and the anchor gave way.
 
And, are those ropes tied to the bow hanging in the trees? Well, that can only mean he tied them there. What was the tide at high tide last night in that area? I'm just having a hard time following this. It simply looks like he wasn't driving, he was possibly tied to the trees during high tide, went to sleep and became grounded? Tide levels are pretty high in that area. Ooops. And, on a perigee, that might be at least 3-5 feet higher than a normal high tide.
 
Well, I don't know but I would guess from reading the story about everyone being okay with bumps and bruises it would seem the captain fell asleep and drove up in there. Motors don't stay down when they hit rocks that big. It's tied off so if they get an abnormally high tide the boat doesn't go anywhere or capsize. The comments listed in the link seemed to point to a big tide in a couple weeks that they will try to float out of there then. I'd change the name of the boat to Rocky. Maybe the captain was one of Snow White's 7 drawfs. Glad everyone is ok. :)
 
That is going to have to be a real high tide to float it off. Might just take some pulling to get it off on even a high tide. Jim's right, ouch "That is going to leave a mark."

It would be nice to hear the whole, real story.

I to would like to hear the real story. Motor up and lines to the beach may very well been done after the fact. I dont know why you would wait for a tide to get it off. Secure the bow with rope, jack the stern up and place a long round chunck of drift wood under it. Place three or four like that equally spaced under the hull and then roll her back into the water. More water is a big help but not a must have. Wet drift wood is very slick. I have moved full 1000 and 500 gallon propane tanks with peeler poles on flat round and even up hill once. It works well.

I want to know how fast he was going and what damage to the hull was done.

Explorer took 3 off The boat. Just banged up. From the look of prop she's was on step. There a hole in bow. Is what they said to coast guard on channel 22. Looks like youngster boys have some explaining to due.

I think if you look at the stern the answer to recovery is there. They have already attached a couple of buoys. Rig some more buoys across the stern to provide floatation as there will be some tides that will pick the stern up before the bow will float. I think when the stern starts floating the boat will slide off so patch the holes get your come along to let it slide down slowly.
 
There is apparently a hole in the bow. This happened at one of the largest tides of the year. No matter what, there will be some dragging involved, maybe into the mouth of a big landing craft. There is a little more info on Alaska outdoors forums, power boating. A couple more pics too.
 
Years ago the police could usually tell if a driver was on Qualudes as the accident scenes never had skid marks. The thought was the driver just said oh wow and crashed never thinking to hit the brakes or turn the wheel. Let us not forget this is another wonderful thing about boating I never thought of before; boats don't leave skid marks. With the exception of some maybe in the captains shorts as he awakened to loud noises indicating something was going a miss. :mrgreen: There has to more to this story. Nobody knew el capitan was tired? Can't wait for the real whole story.

Look at the cabin top- Definately a Venture series, probably 23.
