Can You Say - Small World

There is a recent thread from docsears regarding his search for a CDory. I posted a comment, and I received a PM from him yesterday. His name struck a chord. Sure enough, Hayden and I were classmates at Southern Oregon State College in Ashland, Oregon during the late '70s. We were in general chemistry together, and probably several other classes as well. What a small world.

Yes it is a small world.

I brought my boat, "Jim's Dorie" home and had it parked in the alley for a while. A neighbor from the other end of the block stopped by one day to tell me what a great boat I had, and that it was a great fishing boat. "Yea they are," I said. He said, "No, you don't understand, That boat is a great fishing boat." Turns out he had been friends with Jim when they were down in California. Jim and Dorie left to come to Washington, Adam, my neighbor, lost track of them over some time, and then "Jim's Dorie" turns up in the other end of his alley. Chills huh? Jim is gone now, and the boat name is changed, but I still see Adam occasionally.

Six months after picking up our boat in the PNW (2006), we were cruising in the Florida Keys. I was having moments of missing our Corsair sailing trimaran... and there at Bahia Honda was a nice couple with an F-24 Corsair. We visited as I walked by, and they invited us out for a sail. Turns out, the guy (Charless) is a cousin to our Dr. Bob. Reasonably small world. Fast forward to this past summer at Friday Harbor... a guy and his wife in a C-Dory looked kinda familiar. I started a conversation with them, turned out to be... Charless and Marjorie! Small world.

Other small world C-Dory stories?

When I was a kid in the late 1940's I would setup pins in the winter and caddy in the summer. One of the ways we made a little extra on the golf course was to retrieve balls that were hit into the Wallkill river. One of my friends in this endeavor, Dick McEntee, was a soloist in a church choir. Often, in the days before a wedding he would practice "I love you truly" while we waited for some errant golf ball to go kerplush in the water. Fast forward to 2008 and I'm studying the candidates for state wide election and there, under the listings for "Washington state soliciter" is a picture of my friend, J. Richard McEntee. Unfortunately, I of course couldn't vote for him because he is a Republcan, although I have to admit I'm sorry that he lost. .

A couple of years ago while standing in line to go through the National Archives in Washington DC the guy in front of us turned and noticed the CDory vest I was wearing. After a little small talk, how long you here, where you from, he asked, So you guys know Pat and Patty Anderson? He was the mayor of Snoqualmie Wa. Small world, 6 degrees of separation. Goes to show always mind your manners, watch what you say, and wear clean underwear.

This was the second time that I've reconnected with friends from the past via CBrats. You long time brats will probably remember the late Marvin Miller from Florida. Marvin and I were classmates at the Aviation Electricians school at NAS Jacksonville.

Bill Uffleman and I also share common friends from our tours in the Marines.

I was standing at the rail of the USS Belleau wood while cruising thru the Philippines talking to some people in my unit (2/7) about home and wilder times. I mentioned my old datsun 510 and one of the new guys from snipers turns his head and looks at me funny. Ask if I remember picking up a 15 yr old boy that was hitch hiking on the back road to pollack pines road late at night. Long story short it was him. He was up visiting his grand parents in Pollock pine and gotten to far from home late at night. I took him home and never thought twice nor saw him again. End up being good friends in the Corps

Well, I was looking over another recent thread, the one about 16 vs 19 footers. In that thread it was mentioned that Nate Leonard and his 16 footer participated in several east coast get togethers and cruises. That reminded me of the fact that several years ago Nate commented on the C-Brats site that he lived near Lake Cayuga in upstate NY. Dotty and I, being Cornell grads, we corresponded and it turned out that Nate is married to a woman whose family had the next farm over from Dotty's parent's farm in Jenksville, NY. Dotty was about 4 years old at the time, so that was about 70 years ago! We subsequently had a nice visit with Nate while he was in the Pacific North West on business and had a chance to take him out on our 16 footer. .
