I may have missed this if someone else posted it already.

Beginning this year ALL vessel operators must have a PCOC to operate a boat in Canada if -

a. you are a resident. to included leased or rented boats
b. a non resident operates their own vessel in Canadian water for more then 45 consecutive days. ( roger, warren)
c. A non resident operates a rented, leased or lodge boat this is registered in Canada.

Its only going to cost you $40. just another attempt to tax you with out calling it a tax.
 
For Me,
I'm going to boycott Canada. You can drop a duce in a bucket up there but no portapotties are allowed. Now this, we need to start charging them for wearing white socks with sandals in Florida. I'm even going to take my Canadian flag off my suitcase. :)

Looks like one of our boater safety cards should do the trick. I have one of those already so no problem here.

What is acceptable proof of competency for non-residents?

For non-residents, proof of competency can take one of three forms:

1.A Pleasure Craft Operator Card;
2.A completed boat rental safety checklist (for power-driven rental boats); or,
3.An operator card or equivalent which meets the requirements of their state or country.

Will-C. I am sure that Americans have the same card or equivalent Boat Safety Operators Card that will be accepted in Canada.I agree, anyone who wears white socks with sandals should be taxed , except the ladies of course. :D Tug
 
Tug, we can get boater safety cards here but it the same problem. a tax for no reason. Yes I would like to see safer boaters but a BSC is not going to do that.

Almost everyone in the U.S. takes driver safety in high school. But I see complete morons on the road everyday. It does not make the road safer. Enforcement makes the road safer. California does not run speed traps the way they do here in Wa. Ca has laws against entrapment. Here in Wa I have seen cops dressed as road workers with radar guns running speed traps out on Highway 2. And guess what? people do not speed here nears as much as Ca. They just don't , why because there is a higher change of getting caught. enforcement works.

boater safety cards earned by taking online test are a waste of time and money. their only purpose is an attempt to raise funds with out calling it a tax.
 
The issue of Boater Education Card /Licensing in my personal opinion is no different between Canada and the US than between several of the individual states in the US. There are probably the same or greater complexities in some of our own states regarding the requirements of operating watercraft. I read an article in a recent magaizine (can't remember which magazine) about the reciprocity/lack of reciprocity. of state boater education card/licenses which clearly indicates that what is acceptible in one state is not in another. Clearly, the states need to get their acts together and come up with some uniformity.
It seems to me that showing evidence of some type of course study that includes "rules of the road" etc. would temper an enforcement officers willingness to actually cite you for not having met that jurisdiction's requirements. UNLESS of course you were doing something really stupid on the water.
I totally agree with Tom, that having a Boating License doesn't make a good boater, but it is at least an attempt to show that an individual knows that there are "rules of the road" on the waters.

Most certainly, none of these licenses require an "on the water piloting" test. (Kind of like the past when a person did not have to take an actual driving test on a motorcycle....used to be you just paid extra $ to get the endorsement). Heck, I remember getting a "commercial driver's license" many years ago by driving a VW bug for the "on the road test" in Montana years ago. Go figure......
 
New Jersey has been cited for several years as not recognizing other boating safety cards. On the other hand, many of us of an older age are grandfathered in. For example Florida does not require a card if you wre born before Jan 1 1988.
 
If I remember correctly, when Canada started to require the cards they did not put in place any age stepped grand father type clauses. Everyone must get one.
 
The Canadian rule states quite clearly that you need to "meet the requirement of your state or country" or you need to get the Canadian card. I don't have to have a card in Washington if I choose not to (because of my mature status), so not having a card, but being old, meets the requirement of my state, so I should be ok in Canada.

Oh Robbi, if only all of life was so simple. I'm old too! I should get double excused in all foreign countries because I am old and have teenage kids.
 
TyBoo is correct, boaters of all ages require a Pleasure Craft Boat Operators Card or equivalent in Canada. i think there is a loop-hole though, a Pleasure Craft Boater Card is required for when you use the boat for Recreational boating activities, law states it is not needed if your using your boat for sustenance reasons such as hunting and fishing. Native Americans are challenging the law constantly but as it stands now i would not be caught on the water without one .Fine is $ 250. ouch. Tug
 
Actually, TyBoo was not taking a side in the argument. I was just liking the possibility of getting an old age credit. There is enough to worry about in my own country so I don't concern myself too much with other countries.
 
You might like the credit your insurance will give you for having a boater safety card. We use progressive and the discount was around 20% for getting one. Not sure if you can get the same discount for being "older".
 
I agree with Mike, unfortunately that"s about the only "credit" you might get these days for being old. The ones we paid for all our lives are being used for other purposes.

Even in USA they are gradually tightening the noose on those who do not have the famous card. Check out the requirements, they are gradually including older and older groups and I am not sure if they will end up with any of us being "grandfathered" no matter how many ankle biters we have.

It's better than nothing but I have to admit that when a 10 year old, non boating kid can attend a 1 hour lecture and pass the course one does have to wonder. :?

Oh, I have the Oregon boater card. Tiffany (when she was 14) and I took a class together. Kind of cool. I am required to have the thing in order to register the boat.
 
"Persons 12 through 15 years of age may operate a personal watercraft (PWC) provided the operator has completed a boating education course approved by Utah State Parks and Recreation, has in his or her possession the certificate issued by the course provider, and is under the direct supervision of a responsible person who is at least 18 years old. Persons 16 through 17 yeas of age may operate a PWC provided the operator has completed a boating education course approved by Utah State Parks and Recreation and has in his or her possession the certificate issued by the course provider. Motorized boats and sailboats may be operated by a person under 16 years of age only if they are under the direct supervision of a responsible person who is at least 18 years old."

As I take it Utah only requires a License if your younger than 17, and older than 12. It's only required if you operate a PWC. Not required for a motorboat operator of any age.

"Many boaters incorrectly use the term "Utah Boating License" when referring to their Boating Safety Certificate. The Boating Safety Certificate is NOT a boating license. Unlike a driver's license, your Boating Safety Certificate cannot be revoked and is good for life."

The cost is $34.50.

We both have the Wa. State boater card so we're good to go. It's supposed to be for "life"; we'll see.
 
Mike, You are not even close to being old. It's those kids who are getting old. :shock: and growed up!!! You are right, too many other things to be concerned about. But, I am milking this old thing. 10% off at Freddies on Tues. $10 to get into the Glass Museum yesterday. SS check in the bank yesterday. And, I got into Hoover Dam free two weeks ago. Wow! Oh, and those reduced priced senior meals in restaurants. It is so worth it. (not)

Sooner or later, they'll find out that you're way to young for senior discounts :wink: :wink: then they'll haul you off to some sort of jail. Maybe officer Mark will be involved. We will help with bail money....
