I've been following a discussion about canvas bulkheads on 16' C-Dorys on the C-Dog site and thought that I'd share my thoughts here.
My 16' had both the canvas bulkhead and the camperback and I was very pleased with both. In fact, I would not have a 16' in the Pacific Northwest without both of these options.
Since trailering down the highway at higher speeds was not "doable" with the camperback deployed. I would always deploy the canvas bulkhead on those rainy days that we never seem to get in Washington State..... :crook . The canvas bulkhead effectively kept the rain from sucking into the cabin as you cruised down the highway. While on the water, if it became a bit chilly in the cabin, you could deploy the canvas bulkhead and it seemed to help keep the cabin warmer and surpisingly much quieter. While "overnighting" on the vessel, the deployed camperback created more room to store items kept in the v-berth during the day and added more privacy to the vessel. Whenever I left the vessel unattended at a dock or in a parking lot for any length of time, the deployed canvas bulkhead provided a bit of security.....ie: to "help keep good boys from going bad".
