Captain of the H.M.S. Bounty found at fault.

Interesting report. Shame that bad decisions can't be reversed. Looking back in time is always 20-20 vision. While near the storm he might have been "trying" to make the right decision given his information and experience, but it really looks awful when you try to piece together the whole event.

Here is the NTSB actual report:

It is worth reading-16 pages.

Despite this, one of the captains friends says that the captain's decision was not "reckless".

Always hard to second guess someone--but there were many who criticized the decision before the ship set sail, and at the time.

The sad part is that two lives were lost--the captain, surely knew what the risks were--even though he must have deminished them in his mind. But the girl who host her life, did not really know the risks, and was lead astray by the captain.

The ship was only a “moored attraction vessel.”, not certified to carry passengers. The CG considered her a private recreational vessel when at sea. The "engineer" had no shipboard experience. Many of the voluntary crew had minimal experience. The ship had know problems, including rot, and probably poorly caulked seams at the last haul out. The dewatering systems were not checked out, and tested before leaving.
