I have been contacted by persons that traveled the Carolina Loop last year and they want to do it again. What do you think, any one else out there that wants to do the Carolina loop this May? I also have been contacted by others that want to do the Chesapeake Bay this spring. I am available the week-end of May 18 thru 21 or 25 thru 28. I am willing to put a trip together during the above times, just let me know what you all want.

Here's a vote for the weekend of 5/25-28 (Memorial Day). Too early to commit firmly, but that weekend looks good, and we've wanted to do this trip for some time.

I forgot that 5/25-28 is Memorial weekend. I can't make those dates. The dates I have available are 5/18-21, sorry for any confusion.

Ernie and Erma do you want to do the loop again?

Dick

Dick,
Joan and I are ready to do the mini-loop and would also entertain the Chesapeake trip.
Art,
I'm with Tevo on doing the Smithfield trip and of course if more of the other folks would be a go for the Richmond trip, I would be up for this as well.
Best regards,
Steve & Joan Baum

Not sure if I can make it or not but would recommend it to anyone who can. Just came thru there last weekend. Drove to Portsmith with a friend to bring his 32 footer back down the icw to Little River SC. We really enjoyed what little time we had in the area. I guess him more than I because I wanted my boat! If I can swing it , would love to do the trip with some fellow brats . I'm not sure on the time frame or the lock but someone mentioned something about the Army Corps working on a lock in the dismal swamp route , sure it will be done by then but might want to check.

Dick,

If something comes up again were I can't make the loop this year,
I will try to give you folks support again with 'stuff'.
I hope to be able to make the run. It has been on my bucket list since
1988; AND I live in the area.

As to the Richmond run, there is fuel 2 places close to Richmond by my
chart book: KINGSLANDS REACH & RICHMOND YACHT BASIN.

There are several others south & along the, or just off, the James River.

The Chickahominy River is a possible side run, but I would suggest this for
another time.

To make the run from Norfolk to Richmond and return to Smithfield would
have to be charted out for the time-lines. It may very well work out that
we would stay at one of the above marinas or someplace up north the first
night.

I would hope to have enough time to walk around that quaint city of
Smithfield and enjoy the ice cream shop. The food, though expensive, is
very good at the Smithfield Inn/Marina. We use to get a discount for
docking overnight while also eating there.

FYI, The Smithfield Marina/Inn is 40 NMs from my marina in Va. Beach.

We closed the DSC for 90 days beginning the 3rd of January to perform routine repairs to the locks at South Mills, so the canal will be open in the spring for us to use.

We would love to Cruise up that way again, First we have heard that the James River has a lot of beautiful sights, the Old Plantation along the River and the farm lands along the banks, if we went by Smithville and it took 4 Nights that would be Ok. Next if the Group wants to do the Carolina Loop that would be Ok, You know how the C-Brats like to eat at good Resturants, you had that covered good on the Loop. Hope to see everyone in May Jim & Sandy

It's great to see so much interest in a spring trip. Looks like we have 2 possibilities for our spring trip, the Carolina Loop or the James River. I don't know much about the James, anyone familiar with (1) the distance to Richmond, (2) marinas along the way with facilities, (3) restaurants, and (4) interesting places to visit?

I will start to look at a James River trip and would appreciate anyone with information to pass it on. Once we have the information we can then decide on our destination, Carolina Loop or James River.

Dick

Dick,
I'll help you gather information regarding places to cruise, to see, to eat and to moor along the James that may be of interest to everyone.
Best regards,
Steve Baum

My boat goes back in the water full time next month at Cove Marina at JEB Little Creek, so I will be exploring and doing much more boating research etc. So I would love to help as well. Michelle's family is from Richmond and we head up there frequently, I believe there is a marina right there near downtown too.

Off to Africa again for a spell though, so catch me up when I get back.

Rocketts Landing http://www.rockettsvillage.com/boating is right in downtown Richmond and is a brand new marina. It is $30/night for a slip and they have fuel etc. The next closest to Richmond is about 25 miles away by land.

This could really be a fun weekend cruise, Friday night at Smithfield after work, Saturday night in Richmond, and then home on Sunday. If some of us took Monday off, it could really stretch to a great trip, lots of historical stuff to see along the way, no real worries about sea state except down at the mouth of the James, Nansemond and Hampton Roads. People could always launch at Rescue, VA too, nice little marina there, or at Bennetts Creek Marina.

Not to highjack the Carolina Loop trip, that is still a lot of fun too, and wouldn't mind knocking it out again as well. Maybe the Richmond trip ought to have its own thread here, lets just go on a ton of trips this year!

Thanks for the help in looking at the James. Anyone know anything about Jamestown, marinas etc.?
