Cell Phone Question

What do you folks living along the border do to keep Rogers in Canada from snatching your cell phone signal ? Seems like everytime I get within 50 miles of Canada my phone goes into international roaming.

Toyman,
1. Get a Satellite phone, come on you have the money. 2.Reduce your signal strength so Rodgers can't see you. 3.Call you provider and tell them you are not going to Canada but are going to be very close and you will not be paying for the trumped up seemly fraudlent charges which amount to a fishing expedition by Rodger's into you back pocket or wallet. (Let me know if this really works) 4. Leave the phone in your tow vehicle. 5. Buy a new Chevy truck and make your calls thru OnStar they know exactly where you are as they are now Gumint owned.
6. Leave the cell phone turned off and enjoy the summer do all you calling on the way back to Texas in the fall.
Question, is your health insurance still going to work up there or is Canada going to want a peice of that too?
Take my advice I won't be using it.

1. Ya, I can afford it but just because I want to die broke - it doesn't mean tomorrow ! 2. They seem to always find me, no matter what bar I'm in. 3. Good luck on that one ! 4. But then how could I play solitaire sitting on the head ? 5. I have a Chevy truck, but it won't fit the aft deck on the 'Fan-C-Dory', guess I need a Tom Cat ?!? 6. I'll probably leave my phone in 'flight' mode - but Hers is ALWAYS busy.... and I ain't touchin' that thing

"Health Insurance" ?? See item #1.

This is one of the reasons that I went with Verizon. When boating season starts I switch to Global Roaming. I go to Canada semi-frequently, so for me that pays off. Just don't tether your laptop while out of the U.S. (don't ask me how I know! )

This happens to me a lot in the San Juans, particularly on the west side of San Juan Island. Normally I just turn the phone off. If I needed to use the phone, I'd probably take a picture of it next to the GPS to show that I was still in the US and send it in to AT&T.

We have a place at Birch Bay, just a few miles south of the Canadian border. T-Mobile seemed it could only get Rogers towers, so we switched to Verizon, which solved the problem near the border.

Toyman,
We rented a house on the north side of the St. Lawrence river last fall near Alexander Bay on Wellesley Island. This is pretty close to the Canadian border. I brought along a laptop with a wireless card modem. My normal bill is 60.07 for the unlimited usage on my wireless modem and for that month the bill came in at 287. I called Verizon and explained where I was along with documentation of where we were by the physical address along with being able to provide copies of the money transaction for the rental. I explained that they needed to credit this out or I'm going to get a new provider and they did credit it all out. They explained that they consulted a map and understood how the problem occurred. I don't think there is anyway to avoid this unless you change your plan and that will get expensive. Just take pictures of your bread crumb trail on your Garmin and explain you were never in Canada with you cell phone. Oh, by the way no need to buy the bigger boat just don't use the OnStar until you are back on the hard.
On a lighter note I heard the health insurance thing has been totally fixed :smile

In Prevost Harbor at Stuart Island, we have connected unintentionally to a Canadian tower for our wireless broadband... big surprise when the bill shows up. Call your carrier beforehand and see what they recommend. Tell them you won't be in Canada and won't be paying any Canadian roaming charges.

It may show up with the phone, but there was no indication with the wireless broadband.

So, if a guy was to put some sort of metallic barrier (mebbe my tinfoil hat?) between the cell phone and Canada could that help?

We have Verizon. When we go to Canada we change our plan to one which includes Canada. This costs $30/mo extra. As soon as we leave Canada, we switch back to the regular plan. No problems so far, except at times people can reach us. May not be the cheapest solution when you don't actually go to Canada, but, there it is.

By the way, this plan used to include Mexico, but not no more.

Boris, is the plan that you use "Global Roaming"? Because that is what I have used in the past and it would be a misnomer if Mexico was no longer considered part of the globe.

I have had to visit medical facilities twice in British Columbia while cruising. Once to a medical clinic for high blood pressure, and once to an ER for a similar problem. Both times I was treated and not charged anything at the time. When I later received the bill, it was reasonable and below the deductible for an out of network doctor. As I recall the ER bill was $144 for a 2 hour visit, complete with tests.

I have heard that if you are on medicare and need medical help in Canada, to say that you were in transit thru Canada to another part of the USA. Otherwise mecicare won't pay.

When we stayed near Victoria BC, we would take the boat out into the Strait of Juan de Fuca a couple of miles and connect with a Sprint cell tower in Port Angeles.

For near border operation, I think calling the provider in advance to advise that you are near, but not in Canada is a good idea.

Warren,

Judy thinks it's called the "North American Plan." I guess either Verizon doesn't believe Mexico is in North America, or the telephone company down there is trying to hold them up. I suspect the latter, since the last time we were there the only phone service supplier wanted $1/min to the US. Though that was a long time ago.
