Checking for water under the vee berth

I know several people have checked for water intrusion under the vee berth. I am interested in doing that check. How do you remove the white plastic plugs without destroying them?

On my 22' cruiser I just put a fingernail under it and poop it out, it may take a putty knife to remove it the first time but after that it comes out with no trouble. I had water in the area last year and found that water was coming in at the port side clamshell area. The factory had not installed a drain tube and water would seep in from the outside in sloppy seas. It took a while to find the problem but I think I have it solved now.

When I first removed the inspection plug, I had to use a pair of pliers with the handles in the plug in order to have enough leverage to break the plug free of the expansion foam.
After that it was easy to remove.
And--- yes--- I had a lot of water in the v-berth of the old boat.

I installed a piece of tube in the hole in the hull that passes in to the anchor rode compartment, this tube bridged the gap between the hull and the rode compartment so that the water can transfer without leaking into the vee-berth area. Just bed the flanged end in a bed of caulk and the hull side should have an area of caulk around the tube that seals the hull and the tube.

Well, good news on the water front. Took the plug out, used a melon baller to dig down to the hull, absolutely bone dry :D :D . I'll still put a tube in the clamshell just to keep it that way.
 
So does this mean that there is no tube connecting the anchor rode locker to the clam shell drain unless we put them in?

That is affimative....at least it was true on my '04 cruiser. You can determine if it is a problem on your vessel by reaching between the anchor locker and the hole going out to the clam shell. I remedied mine by placing a piece of oxygen tubing between the two holes.

If anyone would like a piece of oxygen tubing for this I am willing to mail some to you. Just PM me with your address.

P.S. FYI, if you search the archives, we discussed this issue on a previous thread last winter.
 
My 04 came without a drain. I added one myself and where I drilled the hole was solid fiberglass. I just installed the clamshell cover on the outside.
