CHEVROLET- The Heartbeat Of America ? ?

What could possibly be more American than the Chev? In particular the Bow Tie?? For decades it has been the very symbol of good old American know how. At work the other day I observed something that seemed very odd - check out these pictures.-/,?...? Well OK check them out in my photo album - havn't figured out yet how to add them here! 2 grille emlems- the Chev - made in China and the Toyota - made in USA !! ??
Now I understand the premise of sourcing offshore to save costs(labour) but here is the kicker- The list price for the Chevy emblem is $87.85CAD and the price for the Toyota - $74.20CAD. So where did the savings go? Totota can come here, set up shop, employ us - at our labour rates and still sell us parts cheaper than we can have them made in China?? And - No thats not real gold on the bow tie !!
Somehow, when I see a bow tie now - the feelings of pride it used to invoke are a little muddled. Chevrolet may be the heartbeat of America , but the dafibulator paddles are in the hands of the Chinese!!
No - I'm not anti Chev or pro Toyota - I've owned them both. A 1977 FJ45 and a 1996 Tahoe(6.5TD) Both good tow rigs.

You know, when I went to buy my last car, I ordered a Chevvie. then I noticed that the engine and transmission were made in China. When I looked around, the Toyota Camry was the only car I saw that was made in the USA. Ford was from Mexico, Chrysler was owned by Germany (now Italy.)

So I bought an USA car: Toyota. And the Toyota parts are made in the USA.

I thought that when GM went bankrupt and shed their pensions, they might try the USA again, but I guess not. Judy's Ford truck is made in the USA, but my '88 Chevy truck was imported from Canada. I guess GM wants to be an importer, not a manufacturer.

At least my '63 Chevvy was made in the USA. The only problem is that all the parts are now from China. Or Brazil. Everyone can make money from us but us.

you sure it wasn't a Chery Boris? Chevrolet with engine and tranny from China?! I will be a lot more diligent when I buy my next car. My Caravan is made in Canada and my Nissan in USA, but I don't know how many pieces were made in China...

gm tried to set up a separate company called Saturn with non Uaw workers like Toyota, Honda etc did. They weren't allowed. By forcing American companies to all be Uaw and allowing Japanese companies to set up non union factories didn't we basically hand the industry to them? They make good cars plus were given a big cost advantage.

Robert,

Really, on this forum, good content? I looking for a Canadian made and designed tow vehicle, can you recommend one? Sure a lot of things come from China we are all part of a world economy. General motors has made quite a turn around, which Chevy is a big part. I think I saw they have retaken the largest car manufacturer in world position back from Toyota. I'm trying to figure out why this post on this forum? Something I said? I'm a pretty proud American and since the my signature has the your subject line I can only assume you were directing this at me? Care to Explain? Yes you have owned two fine towing vehicles. They are great as long as your not towing anything too heavy. :)
D.D.

Sorry Will-C, :( I was wondering when I would hear from you! No this was not directed at you or against GM as I thought I pointed out in my post.
And yes I realize a Chev isn't a boat. Several members do use them as tow rigs however and I think some have asked for recomendations here in the gen. chat forum. I drove the Tahoe for 5 years but had too many problems with the diesel. Now have a Dakota(4.7) - love it so far.
GM is also 1 of the biggest manufacturers of blocks used by the marine industry.
My reason for this post was to raise some questions/debate about what we are really buying and who our choice of purchase is benefiting. Simplicity did shed some light on the problem.
My timing for this post - I have worked in the auto sector since graduating high school in 1974. Last week I was laid off due to a work shortage. The place I have worked since 1988 has gone from employing 15 technicians 6 years ago down to 7 now.
I am also a very proud North American - That is actually 1 reason for this post. When we make a decision on what product to buy - which 1 puts the bigger portion of our purchase $ back into our jobs? Tough questions for tough times. Did anyone see Clint Eastwoods "Detroit" commercial?
Point taken on the Canadian built tow rig! I could recomend a few good boats tho. Campion, Rosborough, Stanley , etc.
Again , my apologies if I have offended anyone.
Regards , Rob
