Yes, I believe the one I have pretty much covers from
from New Orleans to the east side of the big bend in
Florida. It has been awhile since I purchased it, but I think
the price was $125.00 at Boaters World.

Bill, I've got the Chesapeake (Lower) to Charleston (MUS007R)which covers the ICW very well. Used it on my foray last year down to Albemarle Sound. I'd be glad to loan it to you, no telling when I'd use it again. Got the Chesapeake on another chip that's the one that I use regularly. Just tell me where to send it and it's yours on loan.

Although I don't have any BlueChart chips (don't get me started on the Other recent thread...dang) I do have a couple (Raymarine) C-Map chips I'd be willing to loan-out if folks have an established history on C-Brats or C-Dogs.

If you're making the Southeast Alaska trip, we have a C-Map chip that covers the entire route from Prince Rupert north (as I recall, I went overboard and bought the Superchip that goes clear around to almost Kodiak!). Got the Lake Powell chip, and another one covering all the San Juan Islands. Sorry, I don't have the actual chip numbers handy, but can retrieve them if someone wants to know.

I think Bill and El bring up a viable concept. Having the sort of boats we have, the inclination to travel-far is a very realistic. Having said that, traveling to a number of areas (not just home-cruising-grounds) can get quite expensive when you're buying these pricey little nav chips; and some will never get used again! If we could come up with some ideas to help other C-Dory folks, but protect our chip "investments" I'd be all for it. May make for some interesting discussions. There may well be a downside I haven't thought of, but I think the idea is worth pursuing.

For starters - I think any agreement to loan a chip should be strictly between members, and clearly spelled-out what and for how long a chip is loaned-out. We might make initial contact through the website, but the specifics would be handled in direct emails, etc. I also think that the recipient should be fully willing to replace/reimburse the owner in the event something happens to a borrowed chip.

I'm sure other folks have other ideas, and I may be out in 'la 'la Land (it's happened before...!), but it'll be interesting to see if other's have ideas to contribute.

That's a great idea, Casey. If anyone needs to borrow a Navionics Gold chip for Nova Scotia and the eastern Canada coast, let me know. (I am in Kenya for a few weeks, so let me know via this site rather than by email.)
 
Yeah, a "chip exchange" loaner program would be great, I'll bet a lot of folks have one or more little used chips. We have a Garmin Inside Passage (basically from Everett, WA, to SE Alaska) that we could put in the program...Doesn't help Bill & El, who seem to have had an offer for what they need anyway, but a "pool" of available chips for trips outside one's home area is a great idea!

Not to worry about "hijacking," you have added on to the concept with some great suggestions:

1. On line initial contact
2. Off line arrangements, including such things as length of time for loan, willingness to replace if lost or damaged.

We have Blue Chart chips for San Francisco north to Vancouver, including the Columbia and Snake Rivers we won't be using until fall.
 
Sounds like the loaner-chip idea has some potential.

I like Bill's idea(s) of initial contact online with follow-up, etc. in member-to-member emails.

Here's an offfer:
I could easily come up with an Excel spreadsheet listing of chip resources, owner's email addresses, etc. With participants input, I will update the spreadsheet occasionally and forward that update to our Primo Site Managers for inclusion on the site (if appropriate).

DaNag/Tyboo - is this workable?

If you're interested in participating, send me a direct email ( lorencasebeer@aol.com ) with your loanable chip information and I'll begin putting the data together, and we'll see if the idea works.

I will leave the details of loaning chips to be worked out between the participants; and merely strive to provide a resource that could link willing members.

Let's see where this goes............

Don't see how it couldn't be "legal". The chips aren't tied to a
Particular chartplotter and they are personal property. We aren't copying them, only loaning them. They are for sale regularly on e-bay, I'd think what we do with them is our own business....

That having been said, I'd loan mine to nearly any C-Brat. I've been burned by being a nice guy before, loaned a mint condition Navy Sextant in a fitted box to a "good friend" that I knew personally at the Quantico VA Marina who was going cruising (a former Navy CPO at that) and never saw it or him again.

Bill and El can have my chips any time as can everyone I've met on this site!! Have already sent my loaner info to Casey in case this thing gets off the ground. We need to bear in mind that they get updated frequently and need to ensure that the loaner isn't held liable for the loanee running aground due to outdated information :smilep :crook :cry

Here's a shot of the Dusterman after his recent Deification. Not sure if that's "Garmin" he's sitting on or not (certainly not Catman :roll: ).... C-Map and Navionics may be under there somewhere too, note that Dusty's on top!!! As he should be...

And it sounds like they were Microsoft [with due apologies to Robbin] lawyers too ("We are only licensing The Software to you, we retain all rights, you don't own jack shit, you can only use when, where and how we say, etc., etc., etc.") My chip did not come with a restrictive license - did anyone else's?

Well, that part you got right for sure. And one thing I have learned from it is they all say "No problem, but here's my card if you get in trouble."

Garmin license agreements for the CD-ROM versions do include some restrictive language (i.e., "The MapSource license agreement states that the data is valid for your personal use only.") Its intent is to prohibit using the second allowed unlock code for another person, so it may allow you to "loan" one of your own. I don't know, or really care, for that matter. But offering or promoting it on a public forum might raise some concerns. I would certainly think that so long as no money is involved it should be fine, but then what do I know?

I'm not trying to be negative here, but wouldn't it be something if right after Bill and Dana got moved up to Washington, he landed right square in Jon's jailhouse and had to sell his dream property to hire you to get him out. And of course, you're somewhere on your latest new boat right then, and can't be bothered, so he has to turn to the :shock: ACLU for help. That would destroy the boy. Of course, Catman would love it and throw a big celebratory party featuring your beer. Dana would run to C-Lou for comfort, and they would both partake of your beer, and Bill, when he finally got free, would use your beer to drown his sorrows. I would feel so bad about the whole mess that I would turn to the drink, too. Of course, B~C would not let me be alone in that, and would bring down a bunch of your beer. The thing I fear most here is that your brewery would do so well through all of this that you and David would actually move on up to the Nordic Tugs and leave our little group. It just wouldn't be as fun without you, you see. And what about Oscar?? He certainly would not be prissy enough for your new yacht, so away he goes. That would cause a big rift in your family, and, well, we'll just see who ends up with the fancy boat. So, my friend, my caution here has little to do with some piddly software sharing. It is really a way of showing how much I care about you.

I suspect that a chip-loan situation might be limited to physical chips that can be plugged/unplugged. As far as I know they are stand alone, and do not require separate authorization codes, etc.

MapSource, BlueChart, and similar downloadable data from a CD might well be a different matter. Beyond the challenge of allowing your "second" authorization code to be used by a friend (which in itself may be confusing), I see the download situation as being closer to a violation of the manufacturer's intellectual property rights, than simply mailing a chip to a friend for a few week's use. I see no problem making such a loan, any more than permitting a neighbor to watch my (legal) copy of a favorite movie on VHS or DVD. Manufacturers are more concerned with unauthorized duplication and counterfeiting (ie. China...), not the simple person-to-person loan of a genuine product.

I already have responses from a couple of our members, so it looks like I better get busy drafting up a framework for the incoming information.

If you choose to respond with chip data - please give me the manufacturer (Garmin, C-Map, Navionics Gold, etc.), and the coverage area (a specific chip code would be nice, e.g. M3006B), and maybe a version or manufacture date. I plan to make this as simple as possible.

Well thought out Mike. It sure gives reason for caution and restraint. So, is the loaner or the loanee going to be in trouble. I suppose I'll have to hire a team of CPAs to keep up with my increase in returns from the brewery too.
