Close encounter of the Orca kind

Anyone ever ride an Alaska Ferry? Quite frequently marine mammals are seen surfing the bow waves. I bet a heck of a lot more marine mammals are "impacted" by that behavior then by a drifting C-Dory.

Not to worry, Redfox. Down here the orca harvest is happening indirectly, inexorably.

The TV News tonight just ran a story with live footage of the Killer Whale Luna that was seperated from its' pod (last year I believe). The Canadian government attempted to reunite it with its' pod as had been successfully accomplished with Springer another K. W. that was seperated from its' pod in the U. S. However, when the Canadian Gov't attempted, the local tribe prevented the reuniting process. Tonight's TV story was about Luna's new propensity to become aggressive towards vessels ie: ramming into vessels and apparently damaging the rudder of a sailboat. Obviously now a big concern to other mariners.

I recently had a close encounter with a marine mammal. I just returned from a fishing trip off the west coast of Vancouver Is. While trolling for salmon with downriggers a pod of Dahl's Porpoise starting playing near the bow wave. About 5 seconds later one speeds under the boat and hits the downrigger cable, which instantly shreds near the boom pulley. I had never had this happen before or heard of it. The fishing line came unclipped and we recovered the flasher and lure, but lost the 15# cannonball and release clip. We couldn't see what became of the critter but I would guess it was severly injured. Anyone ever have anything like this happen?
