Closure of Northern Gulf Coast ICW

Rich Gano (Trawler owner) of Panama City has reported that the Northern Gulf Coast waterway is closed. The cut connecting Chocktawhatchee Bay (Fort Walton Beach and Destin) to West Bay (Panama City area) has collapsed and choked off the GIWW. This is due to over 20" of rain, and a flood/leeve burst along this narrow cut.

There is no time frame for clearance at this point. If you want to transit the ICW in this area, I suggest that you go outside at Destin, and back in at Panama City.

Thanks, Bob for the video.

I suspect they can rebuild the Levee and get a drag line in there to get the sand and debris out, fairly quickly if they are motivated to do so. Doing it by barge or dredge would take considerably longer.

Here is the most recent update from Rich Gano (Panama City Trawler owner) C Dory's should be able to get thru with no problem currently.

We have continued to have inordinate amounts of rain, and the US COE now reports this same area has shoal up to on the southern half of the channel at this mile marker.

The northern part of the channel is OK. For the uninitiated, that is NOT enough room for easy passage of two trawlers. There is no estimate of when the money will be available to fix this, but because it hinders barge delivery of fuel to panama City (our normal method), I assume it will not be long.
