Coast Guard App

I saw a news blurb about an interesting new safety app from the USCG. I haven't used it yet other than to enter my vessel info, but it looks handy.

Is is available for free for both Android and iPhone.

Here is an iPhone screenshot of the main display page.

Not sure how new it is, as I've had it on my iPhone for several years now. I haven't really used it other than to fill out the info, but looks like it could be very useful in an emergency. But glad you mentioned it here, as I had not updated it with the newer boat yet. Done now. :) Colby

Well I'll be! I see now that it is about five years old. Funny, our local radio news folks said it was new and since I had not seen it I took them at their word. I guess we are little slow out here in Orygun.

First time I have seen it. Just went through a few dozen reviews. Most not really very complimentary, and none newer than2020. Most much older. Looks like it could have some useful info but I doubt I would ever be relying on this app if I got into a situation on the water. (VHF-16, PLB, and handheld VHF and flares much more reliable.)

Mike or anyone else in the PNW, I would be interested in your current assessment.

I do use the BoatUS app for buoy and weather access. Have always wished there was a good app for a float plan, but have not found a useful one yet. I have checked in on VTS on a couple of occasions when Strait of Juan got really snotty. They have always been available, professional and reassuring for real-time following.

I did not see a lot very useful on this app!! There are better weather apps and better buoy data apps. Does anyone know of an app that lists local bar restrictions?

The best tool that I see on this site that I can not get else where is the reporting function. It is not other wise easy to report a out of station buoy or a obstacle in a channel.

I sail a vessel for a museum and I use the float plan part of that app every time we take the boat out of the area. It has all the info on the boat so I just add the details and copies are emailed to the museum director and my wife.
