Columbia River Springers!

Well, this is the week I start Springer fishing.
Friends have been hooking them, time for me to start catching them  .

Who wants to join me?

I plan to go this coming Friday....

Lyle, Steve.... Might break down and fish for Sturgeon if it gets reel slow....

Hey Ray
I was at the coast last weekend and lookin for Sea Lion in its usual spot at South Beach marina. It was a warm & sunny day, figured you were out catchin something. Hope to see you at Cathlamet.

Hi Ray,
I will be tied up with things around here untill after the 15th. :cry Anytime after that I will be able to go try for those springers. Where do you plan to launch? What time of day? What can I bring to help out with defraying the cost? I am NOT excited am I!!! How about some spinner making stuff?? I have a lot of it, just let me know what you would like to try. I have lots of red and green beads hooks, wires, blades (Mostly silver) Email me a list and I will put together a package for you. Nothing like catching a fish on something you put together yourself.

Ray I'm stuck here at work tomorrow (what a shock). Weather is not looking too bad, fishing and some time on the water will make for good time no matter what so enjoy the day and let us know how it goes.

Well, change of plans.
Taking the durn dog to the vet in the morning.
I'll pick up parts for my annual on the kicker. It has a frozen throttle cable...

Would'nt start cause it couldn't breath. Can't have that.

I fished the Clifton Channel today for springers, no bites and no fish. There were about a dozen boats in the area, didn't see anyone else catch any either.
We could see fish on the sonar, they just weren't hungry. Twas' a great day on the water though.

Larry, glad to hear you're saving some fish for when the visitors show up. this would be a good evening to limber up your rock throwing arm :)

 I spose I could sneak down to the harbor and lob a few rocks at Tyboo. Mike & Kay motored up for the evening. Nah, they'd probably turn loose that carnivorous pack of dogs on me.

stevej, I was at the CDory factory today and saw your boat sitting out in the yard. She still does not have any engines or steering that I could tell, not sure if they have even started on it. It is a beutiful boat, kind of looks like another one I have seen around.

Thanks for the update and compliments PS_Rick have not heard that's it fixed yet so doubt that it's been touched. The motor is at the local Yamaha shop just out of Portland repaired and ready to be mounted as soon as I get her back (hopefully soon).

Getting tougher to have a unique CD here in Oregon no doubt about it.

Hey you south end fisherguys. I am making a last minute trip down your way for a day of fishing on the Big C tomorrow, but I don't have a clue where to go. I was hoping you could get me pointed in the right direction. I wanted to get a little time in on the river before the big push of fish shows up. I would sure welcome any input you could give me. Like, do I go to Kalama or Cathlamisexpialidotious and in what direction should I proceed. Up river or down. Basic stuff like that would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance. Tim

wellll, you might try putting in at Kramala & heading down river past the nuke plant, on your port side you'll see Prescott beach, I like dropping the hook just down river of the beach. A lot of folks just go across the channel from the ramp and fish along the island...that's one thought

Thank you BCK for your speeedy response. I've got a 14 lb danforth. Do you think it's gonna stick in about 15' of water or so with up to 200' of line? I'm not sure what kind of bottom you have down there but I thinks it be sand. I understand I won't be anchoring in the main current so I wouldn't think it would be a problem. I also have a 20 some pound sand anchor like the serious guys use but I'd prefer not to change out if I don't have to. Tim

Not to sound a bit ungratefull for your suggestion as to where to fish, but just how many fish have you caught from this spot? :D

My springer luck is somewhere between poor and worse than poor...haven't put in as much time as I should. ISeems like I make it out 2 or 3 times, to much boat ramp insanity for my likeings this time of year. Ive' had some takedowns at that spot (and that's about as good as it gets for me this time of year) but it is a popular spot. The tide is running in untill about 8:30 am so trolling would be the morning activity.

That 14 pounder should work fine, we have a lot of good ol mud around here. Got a friend that has about a 16-18# Danforth on his 36' Uniflight and he seems to stick good enough. Up river, above Portland folks start getting ansy about anchors, tis rockier and faster.

The willow grove ramp in Longview is also a nice spot to put in www.cowlitzcounty.org/launch.html
what time you plan on hitting the water?

I'm just giving you a bad time. I remember you indicating you hadn't had much success. I certainly don't have any expectations for catching a fish. Going to meet my fishin bud at 7:00 in Tacoma and don't expect to be in the water until about 9:00 or so. Thought I would spend some time just running around checking it out. Maybe find a spot to anchor up where I don't have to navigate a hog line. Haven't got that one figured out yet. Got a pretty good idea how it all works but I don't need any new holes in the boat if I screw up. Your not going out are you?

The only good hog line is a C-Dory hog line. I hear ya on the scouting mission. I may go out solo tomorrow IF the wind aint blowing AND the weather is nice AND I wake up gung ho. If you see a shiney black F150 parked at the Kalama ramp, that would be an indicator that the above conditions have been met.

True Story, how did the Lower Columbia orientation session go?I took an early morning drive to the ramp in the foo-foo car and decided it was a bit busy for solo launching for my likens. Spent the day puttering on the boat instead, cut a big hole in the roof for a vent.

I'm hooked BCK. Pardon the pun. Put in about 9:30 and ran down river as you suggested and finally dropped the hook about a mile below Prescott Beach. There were quite a few boats in that stretch so it took a while to find a space in a likely looking spot. Caught a 12 pounder at noon on a wrapped kwickfish and then couldn't talk ourselves out of moving until almost dark. Did hook another fish about 6:00 PM but lost it after about 10 seconds or so. We saw six fish hooked in our little group of four boats with four landed. Was a little windy first off but settled down for the rest of the day and was very pleasant. Spring is here. I'll try to post a pic in my album. Thanks for your help.

SEE, that's why I don't do much springer fishing, you buggers from up north come down and catch all the fish :) I take it the anchor held just fine
