Compression Check on 2005 Suzuku 150 HP engine

I am in process of purchasing a 2005 25' Cruiser w/150 HP Suzuki (300 Hours) on it. My surveyor said the boat ran out well at all throttle settings; based on a good sea trial should I still have a compression check done to this motor prior to making a final commitment?

I probably would not. But if you want to go whole hog get an oil analysis on the lower unit and engine oil. The Suzuki 150 with 300 hours is a very low hour engine, and if it runs well, should be good for another many thousands of hours.

I agree, I didn't do it, as Bob knows and have never regretted it. We've got about 290 hours on our 150's now. Our engines are 2006 model year. I've got a service manual if you need info on your prospective purchase.

I had mentioned a compression check on another thread only as a way to make one feel comfortable that the engine is performing as it should, since there was concern that that particular boat might be underpowered. Buy it and enjoy it! :D

Does Suzuki have diagnostic software?

I bought Yamaha YDS software and one feature will show the number of engine hours along with running times (# of hours) at the various rpm ranges
It is easy to connect and takes a couple of minutes to pull the data from the ECM

Yes there is diagnostic software. Suzuki after 2005 have NMEA 2000, so if it is one of these--there was be a port--you can get most of that information on a LMF 200 or 400 from Lowrance.

It is amazing how long motors run when you take care of them. My honda 45s are still going strong with little to no oil usage. I think they were around a pint low or so after running for around 100 hours or so - which is about what I put on them every year. They are getting to have a ton of hours on them........

If you really want the best data , aside from what the engine control module reveals through the laptop diagnostics [ not all is available on the gauges], aleakdown testis very telling. It shows condition of rings ,valves etc. There are factory specs for each motor.
