Correct prop for a 22' Angler?

Hi,

I recently purchased a 1996 22 Angler with a 1996 Johnson 70. It came with the standard prop, 17" pitch. I serviced the engine and the mechanic indicated that the prop pitch is not correct. I get a max of 4200 RPM when I should get 5000+.

Any ideas on what prop to use?

The usual prop for that boat would range from 13 to 15" of pitch, with a diameter of around 13 to 13-1/2".

The 15 inch props are more suitable for the 90 hp engine, and the 13 for the 70 or 75 hp models.

Loading makes a difference, too, with heavy loading needing less pitch to allow the motor to wind up properly.

Elevation of operation also figures in, as well.

Overall, with the 70, my best recommendation would be to go to a 13 inch three blade prop and see what maximum rpm you get.

Each inch in pitch equals about 200 rpm (rule of thumb), so a four inch reduction should yield +800 rpm, and with your present 4200, should yield about 5000.

The old rule of thumb always was 200 rpms for each reduced inch of pitch, I believe. But other things come into play like cupping if you change prop type. It would seem 13P is in the realm of reason for the same model prop.

Those new fairly inexpensive adjustable pitch composite props might be a good bet as well. Maybe someone who uses one can comment.

I just looked up those adjustables (Propulse) and it looks like they don't adjust down enough for your situation.
 
Thanks for the feedback. I will try the 13" one and see how it goes. I started to look at Solas propellers, the 13" one looks like it comes only in a 12.5" diameter. The max I can have is 13 1/4" diameter. Will that make a difference?

Franco, I'd be surprised if your lower unit would not take up to a 13 3/4 0r 14" diameter. My 88 Johnson 70 did. Usually, I think those 12.5 ers are for the 40-50hp class. I could be wrong though.

If I were you I'd check it out and look at this E-Bay find: New 13 3/4 x 13 SST Stainless for like 79 buy it now. Almost to good to be true? Check your model out at iboats.com and see what sizes it supports.

I just looked up the solas and do see some 12.5 dia props listed for certain 70 hp omc's so i'm not sure what to tell you. I guess you should discuss the diameter issue with your dealer or at least measure the radius from your shaft to the anti-ventilation plate before buying anything non returnable.
 
I finally decided for a Michigan Match Aluminum 3 Blade 14" dia x 13" pitch. I installed it and test it yesterday. RPMs went up from 4200 to 5200. Speed from 18 mph to 21mph. Not a great improvement in speed, but the engine runs much better, before it looked like it was overworked and it seemed to be overheating.
